Swiss football club FC Basel announced on Saturday that it will not host a planned concert by Kanye West at its St. Jakob-Park stadium, saying the club declined the performance after a detailed review of the request.
FC Basel oversees concerts and events staged at St. Jakob-Park. In a statement the club said it had received an enquiry about the performance and had considered it, but concluded that it could not proceed because hosting the artist would conflict with the organisation's values.
"FCB received an enquiry and considered it. However, after thorough review, we have decided not to proceed with the project, as we cannot, in accordance with our values, provide a platform for the artist in question within this context," a club spokesperson said.
Swiss media reported the show had been scheduled for June. The cancellation places FC Basel among a number of European venues that have either postponed or abandoned plans for the U.S. rapper's appearances amid controversy about past antisemitic comments.
Recently, a stadium in Poland announced it would cancel an upcoming West concert, coming just days after the artist postponed a show in France. Separately, authorities in Britain blocked the 48-year-old from travelling to the country earlier in the month to appear as a headliner at a festival.
The artist, who now uses the name Ye, issued an apology in January for his earlier behaviour, attributing it to untreated bipolar disorder. In the same month he also publicly renounced previous expressions of admiration for Adolf Hitler.
Coverage of this sequence of cancellations and travel restrictions has continued to unfold across multiple European venues. FC Basel's decision underscores the club's position that event programming must align with its stated values and the context in which it stages concerts and sporting events.
No additional scheduling details or alternative plans were provided by the club in its statement. The broader set of cancellations, postponements and movement restrictions affecting the artist remain in place as reported.
