Five people were wounded and Kyiv’s central Pechersk Lavra monastery, an emblem of the country’s spiritual and cultural heritage, was set alight after an air attack on the Ukrainian capital, local authorities reported, urging residents to seek shelter.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that the strike damaged electricity lines and left about 140,000 people in Kyiv without power. He added that houses and cars were also ignited when struck by debris from downed drones.
In a separate Telegram post, Tymur Tkachenko, head of the capital’s military administration, said the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra was directly hit and that a high-rise apartment building was also burning. Tkachenko characterized the situation as a massive missile attack on the city.
Klitschko reported that five people sustained injuries in the assault, noting that one woman was in serious condition, without providing further personal details or identifying the other injured.
Ukraine’s Air Force confirmed via Telegram that drones continue to attack Kyiv from several directions. A Reuters witness in the city said explosions were audible following the strikes.
The latest strikes occurred after President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he had a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday in which they discussed efforts aimed at ending the more than four-year conflict, ahead of a G7 meeting scheduled in France this week. The Kremlin said Trump told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday that ending the conflict in Ukraine was vital and that he was prepared to assist.
