Italian stocks closed lower on Tuesday as sector-specific declines outweighed gains in a handful of large-cap names. At the end of trading in Milan, the national blue-chip index was down 1.00%.
Sector performance was led by weakness in Technology, Industrials and Travel & Leisure, which together pushed the market negative by the close.
The session's top performers included Nexi SpA, which advanced 1.97% - up 0.08 points to finish at 4.14. Snam SpA also moved higher, adding 1.26% or 0.07 points to close at 5.77. Eni SpA recorded a 0.95% increase, gaining 0.23 points to end the day at 24.00.
Conversely, the largest declines were posted by STMicroelectronics, which fell 7.57% or 3.71 points to settle at 45.33. Prysmian SpA dropped 4.88%, a loss of 6.40 points, to close at 124.65. Buzzi Unicem slid 3.35% - down 1.36 points to 39.21 at the close.
On the Milan Stock Exchange overall, decliners outnumbered advancers by 450 to 259, while 44 stocks finished unchanged. Notably, shares of Buzzi Unicem fell to 52-week lows after closing down 3.35% at 39.21.
Commodity and currency moves during the session were modest. Crude oil for October delivery rose 0.91% or 0.76 to trade at $84.50 a barrel. Brent crude for October delivery increased 0.65% or 0.59 to $91.46 a barrel. The December Gold Futures contract fell 1.15% or 51.65 to trade at $4,422.05 a troy ounce.
In foreign exchange, EUR/USD was effectively unchanged, moving 0.01% to 1.16, while EUR/GBP was unchanged at 0.86. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.03% at 99.51.
Session takeaway: despite pockets of strength among utility and energy-related names such as Snam and Eni, heavier losses across technology and industrial names contributed to a broad decline in the main index by the close.
