European diesel margins rose on Friday as the premium for low-sulphur gasoil futures over Brent crude expanded by $1.44 to reach $76.52 per barrel by 1530 GMT. The increase in the gasoil-Brent spread reflects stronger margins for diesel producers in the region.
Market participants said the improved margins are encouraging refiners to reallocate output toward diesel. James Noel-Beswick of Sparta Commodities noted that refiners are converting fuel volumes from jet, gasoline and fuel oil pools into additional diesel production. That conversion activity is having a knock-on effect on aggregate refining margins.
Several related shifts in international product flows and refinery operations were reported for July and early August. China increased its exports of refined fuels in July, with shipments of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel to destinations outside Hong Kong and Macau totaling 1.74 million metric tons - more than double the volume recorded in June.
Seaborne movements from Russian ports to Saudi Arabia in July included 1.1 million tons of fuel oil and vacuum gasoil, a decline of 18% from June, based on traders and LSEG data. Saudi Arabia remained the largest recipient of those cargoes during the month, supported in part by summer air-conditioning demand.
In India, provisional government data dated August 20 showed refiners processed 5.62 million barrels per day of crude in July, representing a 6.8% increase from June.
Implications for markets and sectors
- Refining sector - Higher diesel margins are motivating refiners to alter product slates toward diesel output.
- Petroleum product trade - Shifts in Chinese exports and Russian seaborne flows to Saudi Arabia indicate changing regional demand and supply dynamics for refined fuels.
- Oil demand metrics - Increased crude runs in India point to stronger refinery throughput and product availability from that market.
The reported changes in margins, trade flows and refinery processing illustrate how regional economics and seasonal demand factors are affecting product allocation decisions by refiners. The data points presented here reflect market-reported figures and provisional government statistics for July and related reporting up to the referenced dates.
