Stora Enso Oyj has struck a deal to sell three corrugated box plants located in Germany to Prinzhorn. The facilities being transferred represent 240 million cubic metres of corrugated capacity, which the seller states corresponds to approximately 125,000 tonnes.
Prinzhorn is identified in the agreement as a major regional box-maker in Central Europe and as the fourth-largest producer of recycled containerboard within the European Union, with 2.4 million tonnes of containerboard capacity. The company operates 24 box plants and reports total box-making capacity of 2.6 billion cubic metres, equivalent to about 1.4 million tonnes.
For Stora Enso, the 240 million cubic metres included in the sale amount to 13% of its overall corrugated capacity of 1,840 million cubic metres. The company noted that the three box plants sold were not integrated with its containerboard mills, indicating these assets were separate from its mill operations.
After the transaction closes, Prinzhorn's capacity inside Germany will grow from 160 million cubic metres to 400 million cubic metres. The company said this level of capacity will represent approximately 3% of the German market.
The three box plants recorded combined sales of 74 million in 2025, according to the information provided. The parties did not disclose any purchase price or additional financial terms related to the sale.
The agreement shifts a sizeable volume of corrugated manufacturing from Stora Enso to a regional competitor, rebalancing capacity metrics for both firms. Beyond capacity and sales figures, the announcement contains no further details on timing, integration plans, or operational handover processes.
Context and implications
The divestment involves assets that were not integrated with Stora Enso's containerboard mills, a point that may affect how production and logistics are restructured following the transfer. Prinzhorn's enlarged footprint in Germany will raise its local manufacturing capacity substantially, moving from a 160 million cubic metre base to a 400 million cubic metre presence in-country.
