Across the S&P 500, Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) led gains, jumping 9.91% to 154.25. Edison International (NYSE:EIX) climbed 8.93% to settle at 58.80, and PG&E Corp (NYSE:PCG) rose 5.92% to close at 14.06.

The weakest stocks on the S&P 500 included Axon Enterprise Inc (NASDAQ:AXON), which fell 8.52% to 518.30. Cadence Design Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CDNS) lost 7.60% to settle at 313.04, and CrowdStrike Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:CRWD) was down 6.90% to 215.07 at the close.


Movers on the Nasdaq Composite

The Nasdaq saw some extreme single-stock moves among smaller-cap listings. NewGenIvf Group Ltd (NASDAQ:NIVF) surged 195.75% to 1.33. Sono Group NV (NASDAQ:SSM) rose 77.43% to 4.76, and FlyE Group Inc (NASDAQ:FLYE) gained 61.76% to close at 2.20.

On the downside, Alumis Inc (NASDAQ:ALMS) fell 56.58% to 9.47. Cellyan Biotechnology Co Ltd (NASDAQ:HKPD) declined 45.54% to 0.18, and VisionWave Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:VWAV) lost 26.07% to 0.61.

Shares in Cellyan Biotechnology Co Ltd (NASDAQ:HKPD) and VisionWave Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:VWAV) fell to all-time lows, with HKPD losing 45.54% or 0.15 to 0.18 and VWAV down 26.07% or 0.22 to 0.61.


Market breadth and volatility

On the New York Stock Exchange, declines outnumbered advances by 1,914 to 817, with 87 issues unchanged. On the Nasdaq, 2,402 issues fell, 1,013 advanced and 188 were unchanged. The CBOE Volatility Index - a gauge of implied volatility for S&P 500 options - rose 9.45% to 16.33.


Commodities and currencies

Precious metals and energy posted divergent moves. Gold futures for December delivery fell 2.41% or 108.06 to $4,373.44 a troy ounce. In energy markets, October delivery crude oil rose 5.87% or 5.03 to $90.79 a barrel, while the December Brent contract increased 7.86% or 6.95 to trade at $95.32 a barrel.

In FX markets, EUR/USD was effectively flat, changing 0.23% to 1.16, while USD/JPY strengthened 0.29% to 160.20. The U.S. Dollar Index Futures were up 0.26% at 99.64.
