Frankfurt Airport recorded 5.7 million passengers in May 2026, representing a 2.7% increase compared with the same month a year earlier, Fraport reported. The company attributed the rise in passenger traffic at the airport in part to the timing of holidays and school vacation periods.
Regional patterns of demand varied. Within Europe, routes to Southern European destinations posted notable gains in passenger traffic. Long-haul travel also expanded, with higher volumes to destinations in the Far East, Africa, and Latin America supporting overall growth.
Not all operational metrics moved higher. Cargo throughput at Frankfurt fell by 1.3% in May, totaling 176,725 metric tons. Aircraft movements declined by 2.1%, with 41,377 takeoffs and landings recorded during the month. Total maximum takeoff weight at the airport came in at roughly 2.5 million metric tons, down 1.9% year-on-year.
Across Fraport’s international network, most airports outside Germany reported passenger increases. Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia posted strong growth of 11.2%, handling 168,820 passengers in May 2026.
In South America, Fraport’s two Brazilian operations at Fortaleza and Porto Alegre together recorded a 5.7% rise, serving a combined total of 1.2 million passengers. Lima Airport in Peru experienced a smaller increase of 1.3%, reaching around 2.2 million passengers in the month.
Fraport’s portfolio in Greece continued to see elevated traffic levels, with its 14 Greek airports handling 4.0 million passengers, a 6.0% increase year-on-year. On Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, the two seasonal airports of Burgas and Varna welcomed 252,375 passengers, up 13.3% compared with May of the prior year.
Not every location trended upward. Antalya Airport on the Turkish Riviera recorded 3.7 million passengers in May, a decline of 5.0% year-on-year.
Aggregating activity across all airports actively managed by Fraport, total passenger throughput rose 1.9% from a year earlier to approximately 17.1 million in May 2026.
Context and takeaways
The May figures show a modest expansion in passenger volumes at Frankfurt and across much of Fraport’s network, while freight volumes and aircraft movements at the hub were lower. The results underline differing trends by region and traffic type within the operator’s portfolio.
