WASHINGTON, Sept 2 - U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Wednesday that airlines, the maritime industry and digital assets could become targets as the administration pursues its plan to squeeze Iran's economy.
Bessent made the remarks in an interview on Fox News following a G20 gathering in North Carolina this week, and he used the platform to caution "everyone" against offering support to Tehran. "My message to everyone is stay away. We all want this conflict to end, and the fastest way for the conflict to end is for no one to provide any support to this regime," he told "Fox & Friends."
The secretary said the administration is engaging in "very fulsome talks with anyone supporting the regime," a comment that underscores the U.S. push to dissuade third parties from providing resources or services to Iran.
Bessent's warning came one day after Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly threw his support behind Iran. In that context, the Treasury secretary reiterated the broader appeal to avoid backing Tehran and flagged a range of sectors that could face scrutiny or restrictions.
On Tuesday, Bessent indicated the administration could extend its focus to airline leasing companies. He also said more sanctions directed at Iranian banks could be announced this week, signaling additional financial measures under consideration.
The combination of potential actions - from financial penalties on banks to targeting aviation leasing arrangements, maritime operators and digital asset flows - illustrates a multi-pronged approach the administration is weighing. Bessent's statements emphasize both an active diplomatic effort to persuade external supporters to disengage and the possibility of targeted measures aimed at specific industries.
