Kyiv authorities said on Monday that one of the people wounded in a weekend shooting has died in hospital, increasing the number of fatalities to seven. The announcement came from Mayor Vitali Klitschko on the Telegram messaging app.
The attacker, described by officials as Russian-born, used an automatic rifle to fire on pedestrians on Saturday in the capital’s Holosiivskyi district. After the initial shooting, he barricaded himself inside a supermarket, taking hostages, before police shot him dead.
"The victim was in extremely serious condition. The doctors fought for his life, but unfortunately they were unable to save him," Klitschko wrote.
Klitschko said that seven people, including a child, remain hospitalised following the incident. Four of those currently in hospital are receiving care in intensive care units, he added.
Ukraine’s security service has said the episode is being investigated as a terrorist act. Police have not yet identified a motive for the shooting, and officials have not provided further detail on the progress of the investigation.
The shooting has prompted questions from senior officials about both the public’s right to self-defence and the processes that allowed the gunman to obtain a firearms permit. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko has raised these issues publicly, noting concerns about how the shooter secured legal permission for a firearm.
Such shootings are described by authorities as extremely rare in Ukraine. Beyond the immediate human toll, officials and the public are awaiting more information as investigators probe the circumstances that led to the attack and the procurement of the weapon.
At this stage, investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses, while hospitals treat the wounded and municipal officials manage the response in the affected Holosiivskyi neighbourhood.
