Ontario County health officials are probing a suspected hantavirus infection that involves a student at Geneva High School, the Geneva City School District confirmed Thursday. County officials announced an investigation into a suspected case somewhere in Ontario County the same day but did not provide additional specifics about the situation.
The school district told families and staff there is no evidence that other students or employees are at risk. In a statement to local media, Superintendent Bo Wright acknowledged the natural concerns that arise when a rare illness is reported and said the district is coordinating closely with the Ontario County Department of Health and following its guidance.
"We understand that hearing about a rare illness naturally raises questions and concerns for families and staff," Wright said.
Ontario County’s public health leadership emphasized that, based on current information, there is no threat to the general public. Public health director Kate Ott noted that the county has recorded only one other suspected hantavirus case in the past 20 years.
"The hantavirus that occurs in the U.S. is not spread person to person," Ott said. "It is spread between mice and humans. If I have it and I sneeze on you, you’re not going to get it."
Ott also indicated that the case under investigation is not related to a separate Dutch cruise ship outbreak that resulted in three deaths and sickened at least 11 others. County officials said the patient will not be required to quarantine.
Local authorities have limited public information while the investigation continues. The school district and the county health department are the primary sources of guidance for families and staff, and both organizations said they will continue to communicate as more details become available.
The sequence of statements from the district and county health officials stresses two points: the rarity of suspected hantavirus cases in the county and the current assessment that the incident does not pose a transmission risk to the broader community. Public health officials have reiterated that the U.S. form of hantavirus is transmitted from rodents to humans, not from one person to another.
Local reaction and next steps
School administrators are coordinating with the Ontario County Department of Health to follow recommended steps for monitoring and communication. County health officials have not released further patient details, citing the ongoing investigation.
The office of public health has advised that, given the nature of hantavirus transmission in the U.S., routine contact with the patient is not expected to result in infection, and no quarantine has been imposed in this instance.
