  • Major individual winners included Shopify (SHOP), Eldorado Gold (ELD) and Perpetua Resources (PPTA); major decliners included RB Global (RBA), Thomson Reuters (TRI) and Curaleaf (CURA).
  • Commodities and currencies moved materially: December gold futures jumped, September crude oil fell, Brent was unchanged, and the US Dollar Index Futures slipped slightly.

Canada's stock market finished higher on Wednesday, with the S&P/TSX Composite gaining 0.96% to reach a new all time high at the close in Toronto. Strength in the Materials, Information Technology and Clean Technology sectors was the principal driver behind the advance.

Top performers

  • Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP) led the winners, climbing 16.47% or 28.56 points to close at 201.97.
  • Eldorado Gold Corp (TSX:ELD) added 12.83% or 5.74 points to finish at 50.47.
  • Perpetua Resources Corp (TSX:PPTA) rose 10.31% or 3.00 points to end the session at 32.10.

Lagging stocks

  • RB Global Inc (TSX:RBA) was the largest decliner, dropping 14.10% or 22.01 points to 134.05 at the close.
  • Thomson Reuters Corp (TSX:TRI) fell 10.21% or 15.63 points to 137.49.
  • Curaleaf Holdings Inc (TSX:CURA) lost 7.36% or 0.93 points to finish at 11.71.

On the Toronto Stock Exchange, advancing issues outnumbered decliners by 496 to 481, and 61 stocks ended unchanged.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX - a measure of implied volatility for S&P/TSX Composite options - eased 2.46% to 14.70, indicating lower option-implied volatility at the close.

Commodities and currency moves

  • Gold futures for December delivery climbed 3.73% or 154.74 to $4,307.34 a troy ounce.
  • Crude oil for September delivery fell 0.92% or 0.70 to $75.07 a barrel.
  • The October Brent contract was unchanged, trading at $79.36 a barrel.
  • CAD/USD was unchanged 0.36% to 0.71, while CAD/EUR was unchanged 0.21% to 0.62.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.16% at 99.58.

The session reflected a mix of significant single-stock moves and broader sector strength that pushed the TSX to a record closing level. While a handful of large percentage gains drove headlines, a comparable number of notable declines left market breadth only modestly positive at the end of trading.

Risks

  • Concentrated single-stock moves - several large percentage gains and losses among individual names indicate potential idiosyncratic risk for equity holders in those companies (impacts equity sector exposures).
  • Volatility and market sentiment - although the S&P/TSX 60 VIX fell 2.46% to 14.70, implied volatility can change quickly, introducing uncertainty for derivatives and hedged positions (impacts options and risk management strategies).
  • Commodity price swings - a sharp rise in gold futures and mixed moves in crude oil and Brent introduce earnings and cash-flow sensitivity for commodity-linked sectors such as materials and energy.
