Paris market edges lower as utilities, healthcare and consumer names drag indices

France's main equity benchmarks finished modestly lower on Friday as losses concentrated in Utilities, Healthcare and Consumer Goods weighed on overall market performance. The CAC 40 closed down 0.16% and the SBF 120 slipped 0.11%, with a mix of notable winners including Dassault Systèmes and Valneva and several technology and materials names among the laggards. At the Paris close, the benchmark CAC 40 fell 0.16% and the broader SBF 120 decreased 0.11%. The CAC 40 settled at 8,636.80, a drop of 13.76 points or 0.16% for the session.

Winners and losers

Among CAC 40 constituents, Dassault Systèmes SE (DAST) was the strongest performer, rising 3.63% or 0.76 points to close at 21.68. Capgemini SE (CAPP) added 2.17% or 2.30 points to finish at 108.30, and Publicis Groupe SA (PUBP) climbed 1.82% or 1.82 points to end the day at 101.80.

On the downside, STMicroelectronics NV (STMPA) led losses on the CAC 40, falling 2.12% or 1.01 points to close at 46.66. Engie SA (ENGIE) declined 1.57% or 0.41 points to 25.72, and Sanofi SA (SASY) slipped 1.19% or 0.91 points to 75.52.

SBF 120 movers

Within the SBF 120, Valneva (VLS) recorded the largest percentage gain, jumping 22.20% to close at 3.00. Ubisoft Entertainment (UBIP) rose 5.62% to 5.45, while Vivendi SA (VIV) gained 3.93% to finish at 1.69.

The weakest stocks in the SBF 120 included X-Fab Silicon Foundries (XFAB), which fell 3.89% to close at 6.67, Eutelsat Communications SA (ETL) which dropped 3.38% to 2.15, and Soitec SA (SOIT) which was down 3.00% to 129.20 at the close.

On breadth, advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the Paris exchange with 258 rising versus 209 falling, and 85 stocks finishing unchanged.


Volatility, commodities and currencies

The CAC 40 VIX, a gauge of implied volatility on CAC 40 options, was unchanged at 18.96 and recorded a new 52-week high.

Commodities moved modestly in their respective sessions. December Gold Futures rose 0.65% or 28.61 to $4,449.01 a troy ounce. In energy markets, September crude oil increased 0.41% or 0.33 to $81.58 a barrel, while the October Brent contract climbed 0.76% or 0.66 to $87.73 a barrel.

In foreign exchange, the euro gained against the U.S. dollar with EUR/USD up 0.45% to 1.16. EUR/GBP was essentially unchanged, moving 0.06% to 0.85. The U.S. Dollar Index Futures eased 0.42% to 99.44.


Notable company note

Publicis Groupe SA reached a 52-week high during the session, closing at 101.80 after a 1.82% advance.

This session's movements left the Paris market only marginally lower overall, with gains concentrated in a handful of large-cap technology and media names and declines more pronounced in select industrial and materials stocks.
