Fabrinet is due to publish quarterly results on Aug. 17 after the market shuts, and options traders are pricing in roughly a 12% potential move for the stock, according to options-derived measures compiled by Bloomberg.
The options data provides a gauge of expected volatility ahead of the release. In several recent quarters the stock's actual movement diverged noticeably from what options implied before the announcement.
Examining the most recent eight earnings events shows that in three instances the share-price change exceeded the pre-announcement expectation reflected by options trading. The company most recently reported on May 4; prior to that release options indicated a potential 15.2% move, yet the stock fell 8.3% on the day of the announcement.
Earlier this year, on Feb. 2, options implied a 12.9% swing but the actual price change was a decline of 3.9%.
Looking further back, on Nov. 3, 2025 options suggested a 13% move and the stock rose 9.2%. The Aug. 18, 2025 release saw the stock tumble 17.1% versus an 11.1% implied move. On May 5, 2025 the stock increased 2.1% against an implied move of 10.7%.
For the Feb. 3, 2025 results the stock fell 19.9% while options had implied an 11.5% change. The Nov. 4, 2024 announcement produced a 6.6% drop against a 12.8% implied move. And on Aug. 19, 2024 the stock jumped 28.6% while options had indicated a 10.3% potential swing.
These historical comparisons illustrate that the options market's expectation of magnitude does not guarantee direction, and that actual post-announcement reactions have at times been substantially larger or smaller than implied beforehand.
What to watch
- Options-implied move for Aug. 17 stands near 12%.
- Three of the past eight earnings announcements produced actual moves that exceeded the options-implied magnitude.
- Past outcomes have included both sizeable gains and losses relative to what options priced in.
Investors and options traders often monitor implied move metrics as they position ahead of earnings, but the recent history for Fabrinet underscores that realized moves can differ materially from those expectations.
