Italian stocks finished the trading session in Milan weaker on Wednesday, as declines in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Utilities sectors pushed the market into negative territory. At the close, the Investing.com Italy 40 was down 0.20%.
Among individual performers, Brunello Cucinelli (BIT:BCU) led gains on the index, rising 1.84% or 1.68 points to finish at 92.90. Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena SpA (BIT:BMPS) climbed 1.64% or 0.19 points to close at 11.87, and Leonardo SpA (BIT:LDOF) added 1.54% or 0.87 points, ending the day at 57.40.
On the downside, Fincantieri SpA (BIT:FCT) posted the largest fall among the named constituents, slipping 2.27% or 0.31 points to 13.32 at the close. Stellantis NV (BIT:STLAM) declined 1.82% or 0.09 points to finish at 4.90, while STMicroelectronics (BIT:STMMI) fell 1.59% or 0.75 points to 46.17.
Market breadth in Milan showed more advancers than decliners: 427 stocks rose versus 344 that fell, and 64 stocks ended unchanged.
Shares of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (BIT:BMPS) reached a three-year high within the session, advancing 1.64% or 0.19 points to 11.87.
Commodities moves during the session included a small decline in U.S. crude oil futures for September delivery, which fell 0.17% or 0.13 to $75.64 a barrel. Brent oil for October delivery was up 0.33% or 0.26 to $79.62 a barrel. In the metals complex, the December Gold Futures contract rose 3.33% or 138.40 to trade at $4,291.00 a troy ounce.
Currency markets were relatively stable, with the euro trading largely unchanged against the dollar at 1.15 and flat versus the pound at 0.86. Elsewhere, the US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.11% at 99.63.
This session left a mixed picture: select consumer luxury, banking and defense stocks registered gains while manufacturing, semiconductor and auto names saw downward pressure. The Italy 40's modest decline came amid uneven individual stock moves and small shifts in oil, gold and currency prices.
