Advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the Sydney exchange by 570 to 479, while 448 stocks finished unchanged. The implied volatility gauge for the S&P/ASX 200, the S&P/ASX 200 VIX, eased 1.22% to 11.40, indicating a small reduction in expected near-term index volatility.

Commodities and currencies

Commodities showed mixed moves during the session. Gold futures for December delivery fell 0.67%, down 29.43, to trade at $4,354.47 a troy ounce.
