Athens market edges lower as small-cap movers offset gains

Greece's equity market finished the trading day in Athens slightly in the red on Friday, as declines in a handful of sectors outweighed gains recorded across other parts of the bourse.

At the close, the Athens General Composite was down 0.08%.

The session's largest percentage gainer on the index was Aktor Symmetochon Technikon kai Energoiakon Ergon AE (AT:AKTRr), which climbed 4.62% - a 0.46 point increase - to finish at 10.42. Real estate names also featured among the top performers: BriQ Properties REIC (AT:BRIQr) advanced 4.25%, or 0.13 points, to close at 3.19, while Noval Property Real Estate Investment Co (AT:NOVALr) rose 4.00%, or 0.10 points, to end the day at 2.60.

On the downside, Ekter (AT:EKTr) led losses, sliding 4.66% - a drop of 0.25 points - to close at 5.11. The National Bank of Greece SA (AT:NBGr) retreated 3.54%, or 0.59 points, to 16.10 at the session's end. Unibios Holdings SA (AT:VILr) fell 1.56%, or 0.04 points, to 2.52.

By the close, rising issues narrowly outnumbered decliners on the Athens Stock Exchange - 56 stocks gained versus 49 that fell, while 28 were unchanged.

Notably, shares of BriQ Properties REIC (AT:BRIQr) climbed to all-time highs on the session, finishing at 3.19 after the 4.25% increase.


Commodities moved in different directions as global markets reacted to various pressures. Gold Futures for August delivery declined 1.43%, equal to a loss of 58.50, settling at $4,041.60 per troy ounce. Energy futures strengthened: crude oil for September delivery rose 2.67%, or $2.23, to $85.82 a barrel, while the October Brent contract gained 2.08%, or $1.81, to trade at $88.69 a barrel.

In currency markets, EUR/USD was reported unchanged at 1.15, while EUR/GBP was unchanged at 0.85. The US Dollar Index Futures were higher, up 0.36% at 100.08.


This mixed session left the headline index slightly lower, with sector-level weakness in Telecoms, Household and Basic Resources cited as contributors to the modest decline. At the same time, select property and construction-related stocks posted notable gains, and commodity price swings added an additional layer of market movement heading into the weekend.
