BNP Paribas judged GE Vernova's third-quarter performance to be broadly in line with high expectations but says the market will now concentrate on how quickly gas turbine slot conversions progress into 2027. The bank maintains a Neutral rating and a $1,090 price target, while highlighting higher construction costs and the need for a steady ramp in conversions as key near-term considerations.

Key Points

  • BNP Paribas keeps a Neutral rating and a $1,090 price target on GE Vernova after third-quarter results met expectations.
  • GE Vernova raised year-end contracted gas turbine guidance to more than 130 GW from more than 125 GW; new orders were 16.6 GW with 13 GW from slot conversions, outpacing investor expectations of 10-12 GW.
  • Rising combined-cycle gas turbine build costs (heading toward $4,000 per kilowatt) and 62 GW of slot additions approaching conversion deadlines through mid-2026 make the pace of conversions into 2027 a primary focus.

BNP Paribas said GE Vernova's third-quarter results met the high standards investors were expecting, but the firm cautioned that the spotlight will now be on how rapidly gas turbine slot conversions are completed as the company moves toward 2027.

The bank retains a Neutral rating on the shares and a $1,090 price target.

GE Vernova raised its year-end contracted gas turbine guidance to more than 130 gigawatts from a prior level of more than 125 GW, a revision that BNP said was aligned with buy-side forecasts. New orders during the quarter reached 16.6 GW in total, of which 13 GW were attributed to slot conversions - a figure that exceeded investor expectations in the 10 to 12 GW range.

“We expect slot conversions to be topic #1 over the next few quarters,” BNP analyst Moses Sutton wrote.

Sutton added that conversion activity will need to increase materially each quarter through the first half of 2027. He noted there are 62 GW of slot additions that were made from late 2025 through mid-2026 which are now approaching their conversion deadlines, and this timing will place pressure on the conversion cadence over that period.

BNP also flagged rising construction costs as an area of concern. The bank pointed to new combined-cycle gas turbine build costs moving toward $4,000 per kilowatt, a rise it attributes mainly to labor and engineering expenses. The bank warned that elevated build costs could increase the risk of project delays and raise regulatory complications for affected developments.

“Ultimately, turbine pricing is secondary if the project cannot get over the finish line on-time, or at all,” Sutton said, emphasising that successful project completion can outweigh pricing considerations when delays and regulatory hurdles emerge.

On the electrification side, GE Vernova completed the acquisition of Trench Group, a specialist in high-voltage equipment. BNP noted the transaction adds $5 billion to the segment’s existing $46.1 billion backlog and described the deal as accretive to segment margins.

Assessing market reaction, BNP said much of the quarter’s positive elements appear to have been priced into the shares. The bank views flat to modestly higher stock movement as a reasonable expectation absent a clear acceleration in conversion activity.

“In a vacuum, this is no doubt a solid quarter but investors turn to the pace of conversions and slot adds in '27,” the bank stated.

Implications for markets and sectors

  • Power equipment and utilities: The timing and scale of slot conversions will directly affect project deliveries and revenue recognition for turbine and power-equipment suppliers.
  • Construction and engineering: Rising build costs, including labor and engineering, could pressure margins and increase project risk across construction-heavy energy projects.
  • Electrification and grid equipment: The Trench Group acquisition expands GE Vernova’s backlog and is expected to be margin accretive within the company’s electrification segment.

Risks

  • Conversion timing risk - The need for materially higher slot conversions each quarter into the first half of 2027 could create revenue timing pressure for turbine suppliers and developers, affecting the power equipment and utilities sectors.
  • Rising construction costs - Higher labor and engineering expenses, with new combined-cycle gas turbine build costs moving toward $4,000 per kilowatt, could increase project delays and regulatory risk for energy construction projects.
  • Project completion risk - If projects cannot be completed on time, turbine pricing becomes secondary, potentially leading to postponed revenue recognition and margin impact for equipment manufacturers and contractors.
