Ukrainian Drone Strikes Set Fires on Tanker and Oil Depot in Southern Russia, Officials Say

Regional authorities report blazes at Taganrog port and an Armavir fuel storage site; no oil spill reported and limited injuries

By Sofia Navarro

Regional officials reported that Ukrainian drones struck a tanker moored at the port of Taganrog and hit an oil depot in Armavir overnight. Fires at both sites were extinguished, authorities said, with two people injured in Taganrog and no oil spill detected. Nearly 50 drones were reportedly downed across the Rostov region during the operation, while the wider pattern of strikes has targeted energy and logistics infrastructure in southern Russia.

Key Points

  • Ukrainian drones struck a tanker at the port of Taganrog and hit an oil depot in Armavir overnight; fires at both sites were extinguished.
  • Two people were injured in Taganrog; no injuries were reported at the Armavir depot and no oil spill was detected at the port.
  • Authorities said nearly 50 drones were downed across the Rostov region; the province borders Ukraine's Donbas region where heavy fighting persists.

Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles struck a tanker at the port of Taganrog and set fire to an oil depot in Armavir overnight, regional officials reported on Saturday.

Rostov region Governor Yury Slyusar said fires aboard the tanker and at facilities in the port of Taganrog were extinguished and that authorities had not detected any oil spill. He added that two people were injured in the attack.

Taganrog, a Sea of Azov port city with around 240,000 residents, has been operating under a local state of emergency since May 27. Mayor Svetlana Kambulova said those emergency measures have been extended in response to ongoing security concerns.

In the neighboring Krasnodar region, officials described a separate blaze at an oil depot in the industrial area of Armavir, saying firefighting teams brought that fire under control and that no injuries were reported.

Authorities characterized the incidents as part of a continuing pattern of drone strikes that have targeted Russian energy and logistics infrastructure. Such operations have at times disrupted activities at refineries, fuel storage sites, and ports.

Slyusar reported that nearly 50 drones were intercepted and downed across the Rostov region during the same overnight period. The Rostov province shares a border with the Donbas region of Ukraine, where officials say some of the heaviest fighting continues.

Outside the immediate Taganrog area, local authorities said damage was largely minor. Officials did not provide a full assessment of the tanker’s damage or detail any direct consequences for fuel shipments; the extent of physical damage and potential impacts on logistics were not immediately clear.

Market observers continue to watch developments in the region for possible effects on energy supplies, transportation networks, and commodity flows, as long-range drone operations have been stepped up in recent months and energy infrastructure remains a recurring target for both sides in the conflict.

There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian officials regarding the reported strikes. The latest incidents follow earlier drone operations that struck oil depots, refineries, and fuel storage facilities across southern Russia, underscoring the continued exposure of energy-related assets to cross-border attacks.

Note: This report is based on statements from regional authorities and does not include additional independent verification of the incidents.

Risks

  • Uncertain damage to the struck tanker and unclear potential disruption to fuel shipments - impacts energy transport and logistics sectors.
  • Ongoing drone operations against refineries, depots, and ports create continued vulnerability for energy infrastructure - affects oil storage and distribution markets.
  • Escalation in cross-border attacks could keep regional transportation networks under strain - poses risks to commodity flows and supply-chain stability.
