Moldovan defence authorities reported that fragments from an unmanned aerial vehicle were discovered in a field near the eastern village of Lopatna early on Monday, after a drone crossed into Moldovan territory from the direction of Mihailovca-Lopatna.
According to the defence ministry, the country's surveillance systems registered the drone entering Moldova at 12.20 a.m. local time (2120 GMT) on Monday. Investigators later found pieces of the device on an agricultural field close to the Lopatna locality. Personnel at the site identified traces that pointed to "the previous occurrence of an explosion," the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry noted that an attack by Russian forces had taken place overnight in neighbouring Ukraine and that the drone fragments are being analysed to establish both their origin and the precise circumstances of the incident.
Moldova's foreign ministry commented on the discovery, saying that the event "underscores the risks and consequences that the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine poses to regional security and neighbouring states." The statement links the incident to broader regional tensions arising from the conflict in Ukraine.
Officials emphasised the investigative focus: forensic examination of fragments to determine provenance and to clarify how the device came to land on a cultivated field near the border. The defence ministry has not released further technical details about the make or model of the unmanned aerial vehicle, or about the extent of any damage on the ground.
Authorities in Chisinau noted that Moldova has experienced multiple prior episodes involving Russian drones crossing into its airspace or debris from drones falling into border-adjacent areas. In light of these recurring incidents, President Maia Sandu said on Sunday that the conflict in Ukraine has highlighted Moldova’s need for high-technology interceptor drones and called for new legislation to facilitate domestic manufacture of such systems.
For now, the immediate actions are narrowly focused: secure the scene, examine physical evidence, and assess whether the fragments can be linked to the overnight attack in Ukraine that the ministry referenced. Moldova’s statements reflect concern about spillover risks to neighbouring countries, while investigators work to produce conclusive findings.
