Mexico's equity market ended the trading day in positive territory on Tuesday, with the S&P/BMV IPC finishing up 0.22%.
Sectors that supported the uptick included Industrials, Consumer Goods & Services and Consumer Staples, which together pushed the benchmark into positive territory at the close.
The session's strongest individual performers on the S&P/BMV IPC were Grupo Carso, S.A.B. De C.V. (BMV:GCARSOA1), which climbed 5.16% - a gain of 7.46 points - to finish at 152.00. Regional SAB de CV (BMV:RA) advanced 4.50%, adding 6.00 points to close at 139.19. Bolsa Mexicana De Valores SAB De CV (BMV:BOLSAA) also posted solid gains, rising 4.44% or 1.68 points to end the day at 39.54.
On the downside, Fomento Economico Mexicano UBD (BMV:FEMSAUBD) was the weakest S&P/BMV IPC component, sliding 3.83% or 8.84 points to 222.17 at the close. Cemex SAB de CV (BMV:CEMEXCPO) fell 1.78%, down 0.38 points to 20.99, while Gentera SAB de CV (BMV:GENTERA) lost 1.37% or 0.56 points to finish at 40.42.
Market breadth favored advancing names: rising stocks outnumbered decliners on the Mexico Stock Exchange by 156 to 88, with 12 issues unchanged.
Commodities showed mixed results during the trading session. Gold Futures for August delivery declined 1.18% - down 48.20 - to settle at $4,028.80 a troy ounce. Energy contracts diverged: crude oil for September delivery fell 3.99% or $3.20 to $77.05 a barrel, while the October Brent contract rose 1.11% or $0.91 to trade at $82.73 a barrel.
Currency moves accompanied the market: the U.S. dollar rose against the peso, with USD/MXN up 0.12% to 17.44. The euro strengthened versus the peso as well, with EUR/MXN up 0.18% to 19.87. The US Dollar Index Futures traded lower, down 0.11% at 101.28.
Overall, Tuesday's session delivered a modest gain for the Mexican benchmark driven by a handful of strong performers in industrial and consumer-oriented companies, while commodity price shifts and currency fluctuations were notable features of the trading day.
