July 24 - Meta is deploying new capabilities for its Meta AI assistant in select markets that let the chatbot complete certain actions without continuous user prompting, the company announced on Friday. The refreshed assistant runs on Meta's Muse Spark 1.1 model and is built to interpret user context so it can act autonomously on some tasks.
The company outlined several specific uses for the upgraded assistant:
- It can produce daily briefings by summarizing events on a user's calendar.
- Users can configure the assistant to perform recurring tasks - examples cited by the company include weekly meal plans and periodic trend updates.
Meta said these features are being rolled out initially in a handful of markets through the Meta AI application and the meta.ai website. The company also indicated plans to extend availability to additional regions and to integrate the functionality into other platforms, with WhatsApp named as a targeted expansion point.
In its announcement, Meta emphasized that people will continue to control how they interact with the AI. Incognito chats remain an option for users who prefer private conversations rather than interactions that use personal context or ongoing task automation.
"This is our next step toward personal superintelligence: an AI that knows your context, is there for you whenever you need it," Meta said in a blog post.
Separately, Meta on Friday introduced an app called "Seller," designed to provide dedicated selling tools for merchants who use Facebook Marketplace. The company presented this release as distinct from the Meta AI update.
Meta is set to report its second-quarter financial results after the market close on July 29.
The rollout centers on enabling the assistant to act with less immediate input from users while preserving user choice over privacy and interaction mode. The company framed the moves as steps toward an assistant that leverages contextual signals to help with routine tasks and merchant-focused commerce features.
