London Stock Exchange Group's Lipper unit said it is examining an unusually large transaction in one investment-grade bond fund after the movement materially affected its aggregated fixed-income fund flow data.
"We are investigating this matter and have identified a sizeable flow within the Short-Intermediate Investment Grade Debt classification that has negatively impacted the fixed income universe," a Lipper spokesperson said, adding that the firm will release additional details after the underlying data are validated.
While the review is under way, Lipper has removed the fund in question from its current weekly flow report, the spokesperson said. The data provider is assessing whether the reported movement represents a transfer or another type of operational event tied to the fund's account activity.
The timing of the probe coincides with unusually large reported redemptions in the U.S. investment-grade bond fund sector. Lipper's published figures showed U.S. investment-grade bond funds experiencing $7.1 billion in net outflows over the referenced week, which the firm described as the largest weekly withdrawal on record. That weekly number followed a record one-day outflow of $8.2 billion on July 20.
However, Lipper's review altered the headline picture. Excluding the fund under review, U.S. investment-grade funds posted net inflows of $1.54 billion in the week ended July 22, according to data cited in recent reporting. That revision underlines how a single, large movement in one fund's account can change the interpretation of broader market flows.
The investigation centers on classifying the event correctly for reporting purposes. Lipper said it is working to validate the data before issuing further information on the nature of the transaction. Removing the fund from the weekly flow report is intended to prevent the distorted figure from continuing to affect summary statistics until validation is complete.
Observers of fixed-income markets and stakeholders in asset management and fund distribution will be watching for Lipper's findings, as large, anomalous transactions in individual vehicles can materially alter aggregated fund flow metrics that investors and managers use to assess demand patterns across the fixed-income universe.
