Germany's stock market finished slightly in the red on Monday, with several cyclical and tech-related names among the heaviest decliners. At the close in Frankfurt the benchmark DAX lost 0.07%, the mid-cap MDAX decreased 0.03% and the tech-heavy TecDAX retreated 0.91%.
On the DAX, consumer goods group Beiersdorf AG O.N. (ETR:BEIG) was the session's strongest performer, advancing 2.11% to finish at 81.28. Banking heavyweight Deutsche Bank AG NA O.N. (ETR:DBKGn) rose 2.10% to 33.06, and Daimler Truck Holding AG (ETR:DTGGe) added 2.07% to close at 46.37.
Conversely, a number of industrial and technology-related names weighed on the index. Infineon Technologies AG NA O.N. (ETR:IFXGn) declined 3.23% to 54.16 by the close. Siemens Energy AG (ETR:ENR1n) slipped 3.01% to 148.74 and Rheinmetall AG (ETR:RHMG) fell 2.61% to 1,125.20.
The MDAX displayed a similar split. Specialty chemical maker Wacker Chemie O.N. (ETR:WCHG) led gains in the mid-cap universe, jumping 4.14% to 93.10. Deutsche Lufthansa AG (ETR:LHAG) climbed 2.37% to 7.79, while Evonik Industries AG (ETR:EVKn) rose 2.29% to 18.80.
On the downside, Aumovio Se (ETR:AMV0n) lost 3.96% to 35.15, RENK Group AG (ETR:R3NK) fell 2.88% to 46.44 and Hensoldt Ag (ETR:HAGG) was down 2.60% to 86.98 at the close.
Among TecDAX components, 1&1 AG (ETR:1U1) was a notable gainer, increasing 2.55% to 22.10. United Internet AG NA (ETR:UTDI) rose 0.90% to 24.78 and Siemens Healthineers AG (ETR:SHLG) inched up 0.47% to 40.39.
Broader lists of losers included SUSS MicroTec SE (ETR:SMHNn), which fell 5.99% to 69.05, SMA Solar Technology AG (ETR:S92G), down 3.61% to 54.75, and Eckert & Ziegler AG O.N. (ETR:EUZG), off 3.44% to 13.18.
Market breadth on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange showed 354 decliners versus 306 advancers, with 32 stocks unchanged. Evonik Industries reached a 52-week high as it advanced 2.29% to 18.80, while Eckert & Ziegler fell to a 52-week low after losing 3.44% to 13.18.
Volatility and commodity moves were mixed. The DAX volatility index, which measures implied volatility for DAX options, declined 5.45% to 16.08.
In commodities, Gold Futures for December delivery gained 0.74%, rising by 34.46 to $4,715.06 a troy ounce. On the energy front, crude oil contracts were lower: October delivery plunged 2.57% or 2.24 to $84.82 a barrel, and the November Brent contract fell 2.21% or 2.05 to $90.62 a barrel.
Currency markets were broadly unchanged from the prior session. EUR/USD was flat at 1.17, showing a 0.09% change as reported, while EUR/GBP was effectively unchanged at 0.86 with a 0.01% move. The US Dollar Index Futures was reported up 0.17% at 98.90.
These closing figures paint a picture of modest selling pressure across a selection of industrial and technology names, offset partially by gains in select financial and specialty chemical stocks. The net result left major indices with only marginal losses at the end of trading.
