Canadian Solar on Friday inaugurated a solar cell manufacturing facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana, marking a significant industrial investment by its U.S. manufacturing arm, CS PowerTech. The company said the plant is intended to help close a shortfall in domestic production for a component that is today largely produced in Asia.
CS PowerTech put nearly $1 billion into the new factory. At full ramp, the site is designed to deliver 6 gigawatts of solar cell output per year and is projected to employ in excess of 1,200 workers, with full operational capacity scheduled for early 2027.
The Jeffersonville facility is the first plant in the United States purpose-built to manufacture heterojunction solar cells. According to the company, heterojunction technology delivers higher efficiency than conventional cell designs, a distinction the plant aims to capitalize on as part of the domestic supply chain build-out.
