FARNBOROUGH, England, July 24 - The Farnborough airshow provided a vivid snapshot of the recruitment challenge facing the UK aerospace and defence industry: eye-catching aircraft, engine-building challenges and Top Gun-style flying displays aimed at inspiring the next generation, while industry leaders warn the pipeline of skilled engineers is thinning.

Seventeen-year-old Hassan Butt, volunteering at the event, described the fascination that draws many young people to aviation: "Everyone when they’re kids, they look up, they see the planes flying and they think, damn..." He said his own ambitions lean toward a career in aerospace and engineering with a focus on missiles. Across the exhibition hall, dozens of stands were staffed by companies and industry bodies hoping to convert that youthful enthusiasm into new hires.

But recruiters and trade groups cautioned that candidates like Butt are relatively rare. The UK aerospace and defence sector is contending with a shortfall estimated at around 10,000 specialized engineers each year, a problem exacerbated by the migration of talent into AI and other emergent technologies. A March report from the Royal Aeronautical Society showed a striking age imbalance in Britain: more than 50% of licensed aerospace engineers are older than 50, while fewer than 10% are under 30.

Trade group ADS noted that, although the UK aerospace sector has expanded by 31% over the past decade, this growth has not been matched by replenishment of skilled workers. "We in the aerospace industry have been experiencing a shortage of skilled workers for some time ... despite the industry growing year on year for the past 10 years," said Kevin Craven, chief executive of ADS.

At Farnborough, much of the recruitment effort was hands-on. Exhibitors staged engine assembly tasks, offered interactive demonstrations and showcased dramatic flight displays to spark interest. Many firms and industry bodies also promoted entry-level roles and graduate schemes at their stands - a shift from the feeder apprenticeship programmes that were cut during previous rounds of cost-saving.

Companies including Boeing and Airbus face a record order backlog, and are under pressure to increase production even as experienced engineers approach retirement. The competition for early-career engineers is intense: sectors that prize similar engineering skills, notably technology firms, often present lower barriers to entry and higher starting pay.

Jerrold Lundquist, a consultant and managing director at advisory firm The Lundquist Group, highlighted the pull of big AI and tech companies for top graduates. "If you’re an engineer coming out of Purdue or MIT or any other of the premier aerospace engineering programmes, you might say maybe I’ll go to Anthropic or OpenAI as opposed to Boeing or Airbus," he said.

The UK government is hopeful that renewed defence investment, spurred in part by the war in Ukraine, will help make aerospace careers more attractive. Defence projects and unmanned systems - such as BAE Systems’ Brontanax - were cited as possible leverages to draw recruits who are excited by cutting-edge applications.

ADS reported that the aerospace, defence and security sectors added 46.8 billion pounds to the UK economy last year. At the same time, several industry participants and students at the show urged broader outreach outside of high-profile events like Farnborough to improve recruitment and diversity.

Another volunteer at the show, 17-year-old Molly Haydon, said interest is there but not everyone sees a clear path into the sector. "I think they need to educate more young people on it and to get them more knowledge that there are still jobs available in the sector for everyone," she said, adding that more targeted engagement could help attract women and underrepresented groups.

As aerospace firms wrestle with production targets, an aging workforce and competing employers in the technology space, the current mix of recruitment tactics - from airshow demonstration to graduate programmes - reflects an industry trying to convert spectacle into sustainable careers.
