At least two thousand people have been reported killed across the Middle East since the U.S. and Israel conducted attacks on Iran beginning on February 28, with Gulf states hosting U.S. forces as well as Lebanon rapidly drawn into the fighting. The figures released by national authorities and other officials cover a range of combat incidents, missile and drone strikes, and accidents connected to military operations. The tallies have not been independently verified.
Key country-by-country tallies
- Iran - State media on Monday put the most recent death toll at at least 1,270 people. Separately, Iran’s ambassador to the U.N. said on March 6 that at least 1,332 people had been killed since the conflict began. Authorities have not clarified the discrepancy between those two counts. It is also unclear whether those numbers include at least 104 personnel the Iranian military said were killed in a U.S. attack on an Iranian warship off Sri Lanka’s coast on March 4.
- Lebanon - Lebanese officials say at least 850 people have been killed in Israeli strikes. The World Health Organization stated that at least 98 of those killed were children.
- Iraq - Iraqi health authorities report at least 30 deaths, most of whom were members of the Shi’ite Popular Mobilisation Forces. Port security officials also reported that one foreign crew member was killed in an attack on tankers near an Iraqi port.
- Israel - Israel’s ambulance service reported 12 fatalities, including nine people killed in an Iranian missile strike on Beit Shemesh near Jerusalem on March 1. The Israeli military said two of its soldiers were killed in southern Lebanon.
- United States - Thirteen U.S. service members have been reported killed. Six were confirmed dead after a U.S. military refuelling aircraft crashed over Iraq, according to U.S. military statements, and seven others were reported killed in action during operations against Iran.
- United Arab Emirates - The UAE’s defence ministry reported six people killed in Iranian attacks.
- Kuwait - Authorities have reported six deaths, which include two people killed in Iranian attacks, two interior ministry officers and two army soldiers.
- Syria - State news agency SANA said four people were killed when an Iranian missile struck a building in the southern city of Sweida on February 28.
- Oman - Two people were reported killed in a drone strike on an industrial zone in Sohar province, described as the first fatalities inside the country related to the conflict. Separately, a vessel manager said one person died earlier when a projectile hit a tanker off the coast of Muscat.
- Saudi Arabia - Two people were killed when a projectile fell on a residential location in Al-Kharj city, southeast of the capital Riyadh.
- Bahrain - Two people were reported killed in two separate Iranian attacks, the most recent striking a residential building in the capital Manama, according to the interior ministry.
- France - One French soldier was killed and six others wounded after a drone attack in northern Iraq, where French forces were providing counterterrorism training.
Across the region, reported fatalities encompass a mix of military personnel, civilians, including children, and foreign crew members affected by attacks on commercial shipping. Some national tallies cite specific incidents, while other numbers are presented as cumulative totals over the course of the hostilities.
Officials have not resolved discrepancies in certain counts, and in some cases it is unclear whether particular incidents have been included in national totals. The absence of independent verification means the full scope and attribution of casualties remain subject to revision as more information becomes available from authorities and other reporting channels.
