More than a month into the confrontation that escalated after U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28 and Iran's subsequent strikes on Israel, U.S. bases and Gulf states, authorities and rights groups have reported casualties in multiple countries across the region. The tallies below are those publicly reported through March 20 and have not been independently verified.
Iran
U.S.-based rights group HRANA reported on Thursday that 3,186 people have been killed in Iran. HRANA said 1,394 of those were civilians, including at least 210 children. The group said its totals were compiled from field reports, local contacts, medical and emergency sources, civil society networks, open-source materials and official statements.
By contrast, Iran's state media have reported a lower figure of 1,270 fatalities. Iran's ambassador to the United Nations said on March 6 that at least 1,332 people had been killed since the conflict began, a figure that has not been reconciled with the other numbers. It was not clear whether any of these counts include at least 104 people whom the Iranian military said were killed in a U.S. strike on an Iranian warship off Sri Lanka on March 4.
Lebanon
Lebanese authorities reported around 1,021 deaths from Israeli strikes beginning on March 2. The World Health Organization and Lebanese health authorities said that more than 100 of the dead were children.
Iraq
Iraqi officials have reported at least 60 fatalities. Most of those killed were members of the Shi'ite Popular Mobilisation Forces. Port security officials also said one foreign crew member died in an attack on tankers near an Iraqi port.
Israel and the Occupied West Bank
Israel's ambulance service reported 15 civilian deaths, including nine people killed in an Iranian missile strike on Beit Shemesh, near Jerusalem, on March 1. The Israeli military reported that two Israeli soldiers were killed in southern Lebanon. In the occupied West Bank, four Palestinian women were killed in an Iranian missile attack.
United States
The U.S. military reported that 13 U.S. service members have been killed. Six service members were confirmed dead after a U.S. military refuelling aircraft crashed over Iraq, and seven others have been reported killed in action during operations against Iran.
United Arab Emirates
The UAE defence ministry said eight people were killed in Iranian attacks, including two army soldiers.
Kuwait
Kuwaiti authorities reported six deaths. That count includes two people killed in Iranian attacks, two interior ministry officers and two army soldiers.
Syria
State news agency SANA reported that four people were killed when an Iranian missile struck a building in the southern Syrian city of Sweida on February 28.
Oman
Omani authorities reported two deaths on March 13 after a drone strike hit an industrial zone in Sohar province, marking the first reported fatalities inside the country since the wider hostilities began. Separately, a vessel manager reported that one person died earlier when a projectile struck a tanker off the coast of Muscat.
Saudi Arabia
Saudi authorities reported two people killed when a projectile fell on a residential area in Al-Kharj city, southeast of the capital Riyadh.
Bahrain
Bahrain's interior ministry said two people were killed in two separate Iranian attacks, the most recent of which struck a residential building in the capital, Manama.
France
French officials reported that one French soldier was killed and six others wounded following a drone attack in northern Iraq, where the troops were providing counterterrorism training.
Notes on reporting
These figures were collected from rights groups, national authorities, state news agencies and military statements through March 20. The counts differ in some cases and some tallies were flagged by reporting organizations as using multiple sources such as local medical and emergency services, civil society networks and open-source material. There has been no independent verification of the aggregated numbers presented here.
