Brad Arnold, who co-founded the rock band 3 Doors Down and served as its lead singer, has died at the age of 47, the group said in a statement. The announcement came nine months after Arnold publicly disclosed a cancer diagnosis.
In a social media video in May 2025, Arnold said he had been diagnosed with advanced-stage clear cell renal carcinoma and that the disease had spread to one of his lungs. Following that disclosure, 3 Doors Down canceled their planned 2025 summer tour, citing his illness.
Formed in 1996 in Escatawpa, Mississippi, 3 Doors Down rose to broad popularity in 2000. The band found mainstream success with the Arnold-penned single "Kryptonite," which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other significant singles included "When I’m Gone" and "Here Without You," both of which were top-five hits on the Billboard Hot 100. The group has commonly been described as post-grunge, alternative rock and hard rock.
The band posted a statement on its official Instagram account reflecting on Arnold's role and character. The statement noted his contributions as a founding member, vocalist and original drummer and said he "helped redefine mainstream rock music, blending post-grunge accessibility with emotionally direct songwriting and lyrical themes that resonated with everyday listeners."
"Above all, he was a devoted husband to Jennifer, and his kindness, humor and generosity touched everyone fortunate enough to know him," the band said. "Those closest to him will remember not only his talent, but his warmth, humility, faith and deep love for his family and friends."
According to the band's statement, Arnold died peacefully and was surrounded by loved ones, including his wife Jennifer. The statement did not specify where he died.
The cancellation of the summer tour was announced after his May 2025 cancer disclosure, and the band attributed the decision to his health condition. Beyond the tour cancellation and the details included in the band's message, no additional information about funeral arrangements or future plans for the group was provided in the statement.
This account relays the details released by the band regarding Arnold's illness, the impact on the band's scheduled activities and the personal remembrances shared by those close to him.
