U.S. equities produced a mixed outcome at Wednesday's close, as sector-level strength in Technology, Consumer Goods and Healthcare was counterbalanced by weakness in Telecoms, Utilities and Financials.
On the New York Stock Exchange at the close of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.14%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.58% and the NASDAQ Composite rose 1.20%.
Among components of the Dow, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) led the gainers, finishing up 2.76% or 6.19 points at 230.45. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 2.72% or 3.89 points to end at 147.10. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) also moved higher, climbing 2.60% or 2.58 points to close at 101.87.
On the downside for the blue-chip index, Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) fell 3.19% or 5.47 points to 165.84 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 2.53% or 7.87 points to finish at 302.59. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) lost 2.07% or 4.53 points to end at 214.69.
Within the S&P 500, the session's strongest performers included Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F), which jumped 13.18% to 13.57, Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which was up 12.03% to settle at 41.99, and ON Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:ON) which gained 11.15% to close at 115.72.
Conversely, several S&P 500 names posted substantial declines. FactSet Research Systems Inc (NYSE:FDS) fell 6.51% to 201.87 in late trade. Constellation Energy Corp (NASDAQ:CEG) lost 6.37% to settle at 274.91. Jacobs Engineering Group Inc (NYSE:J) was down 6.03% to 107.27 at the close.
Activity on the NASDAQ Composite produced extreme moves among smaller-cap and micro-cap names. The session's top performers were Dreamland Ltd (NASDAQ:TDIC), which rose 876.69% to 23.05, Mainz Biomed BV (NASDAQ:QUCY) which climbed 315.12% to 1.34, and Roboai Inc (NASDAQ:AIIO) which gained 102.97% to finish at 2.60.
At the same time, several NASDAQ-listed issues fell sharply. Work Medical Technology Group Ltd (NASDAQ:WOK) declined 58.56% to 2.76 in late trade. Reviva Pharmaceuticals Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:RVPH) lost 55.73% to settle at 0.35. American Rebel Holdings Inc (OTC:AREB) was down 51.64% to 0.06 at the close.
Across the exchanges, declining issues outnumbered advancers on the NYSE by 1691 to 1035, with 99 issues unchanged. On the NASDAQ, 1874 issues fell and 1458 advanced, while 193 ended unchanged.
Several individual-stock milestones and lows were noted during the session. Shares of ON Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:ON) rose to all-time highs, gaining 11.15% or 11.61 to reach 115.72. Shares of Jacobs Engineering Group Inc (NYSE:J) fell to 52-week lows, losing 6.03% or 6.88 to 107.27. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) also slipped to 52-week lows, down 2.53% or 7.87 to 302.59. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) rose to all-time highs, up 2.60% or 2.58 to 101.87. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) moved to 52-week lows, down 2.07% or 4.53 to 214.69. Reviva Pharmaceuticals Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:RVPH) fell to all-time lows, dropping 55.73% or 0.44 to 0.35. American Rebel Holdings Inc (OTC:AREB) also fell to all-time lows, losing 51.64% or 0.07 to 0.06.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which gauges the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, moved lower by 0.67% to 17.87.
In commodities, Gold Futures for June delivery were up 0.30% or 14.10 to $4,700.80 a troy ounce. Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.93% or 0.95 to $101.23 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract declined 1.87% or 2.01 to trade at $105.76 a barrel.
Currency moves were modest. EUR/USD was unchanged 0.21% to 1.17. USD/JPY rose 0.18% to 157.87. The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.20% at 98.38.
Market breadth and large individual swings underscored a session of uneven participation. Technology, Consumer Goods and Healthcare provided upward momentum that supported gains in the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ Composite, while losses in Telecoms, Utilities and Financials contributed to the Dow's modest decline. Small-cap and speculative names produced outsized moves in both directions, reflecting continued dispersion within the broader market.
