At the New York Stock Exchange close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.70%. The S&P 500 finished the session 0.33% lower, while the Nasdaq Composite retreated 0.12%.
Top and bottom movers on the Dow
Among Dow components, Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) recorded the session's strongest gain, rising 2.12% or 4.28 points to end at 206.14. Walmart Inc (NASDAQ:WMT) added 1.73% or 1.78 points to close at 104.87, and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) rose 1.48% or 3.23 points to 220.78 in late trading.
The weakest performers on the Dow included Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN), which fell 2.50% or 6.67 points to 259.76 at the close. Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON) declined 1.79% or 3.90 points to 213.53, and Sherwin-Williams Co (NYSE:SHW) slid 1.75% or 6.05 points to 338.81.

Conversely, several stocks in utilities and services weighed on the index. Edison International (NYSE:EIX) plunged 23.07% to 53.98 in late trade. PG&E Corp (NYSE:PCG) declined 20.06% to finish at 13.27, and Aon PLC (NYSE:AON) dropped 9.58% to 321.34 at the close.

The CBOE Volatility Index - which measures implied volatility in S&P 500 options - rose 3.40% to 14.92.
In commodities, Gold Futures for December delivery were reported down 0.74% or 33.56 to $4,496.34 a troy ounce. Crude oil for October delivery climbed 3.54% or 2.95 to $86.35 a barrel, and the December Brent oil contract increased 5.35% or 4.61 to trade at $90.73 a barrel.
In foreign exchange, EUR/USD was unchanged 0.28% to 1.16, while USD/JPY fell 0.21% to 159.77. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.27% at 99.39.
