Israel's TA 35 closed lower on Wednesday, falling 0.20% as losses in the Banking, Real Estate and Biomed sectors pressured the market. While a number of large-cap names rallied — including NICE, Elbit Systems and Clal Insurance, which reached record highs — other notable stocks such as Next Vision Stabilized Systems, Tower Semiconductor and Teva Pharmaceutical declined. Market breadth favored advancers, and several commodity and currency benchmarks moved modestly.

Key Points

  • TA 35 closed down 0.20% as losses in Banking, Real Estate and Biomedical sectors pressured the index.
  • NICE, Elbit Systems and Clal Insurance led gains on the TA 35, with Elbit Systems and Clal Insurance reaching all-time highs.
  • Next Vision Stabilized Systems, Tower Semiconductor and Teva were among the largest decliners; overall market breadth favored advancers 282 to 194, with 73 unchanged.

Tel Aviv equities ended Wednesday's session with a modest decline, as sector-level weakness in Banking, Real Estate and Biomedical names pushed the TA 35 down 0.20% at the close.

Market leadership was mixed. Technology and defense-related names posted some of the strongest gains, while select industrial and pharmaceutical stocks lagged. The best-performing issues on the TA 35 were NICE Ltd (TASE:NICE), Elbit Systems Ltd (TASE:ESLT) and Clal Insurance Enterprises Holdings Ltd (TASE:CLIS).

Top performers

  • NICE Ltd rose 7.38% - a gain of 2,690.00 points - to finish at 39,150.00.
  • Elbit Systems added 4.97% - up 12,600.00 points - to close at 266,000.00.
  • Clal Insurance climbed 4.54% - gaining 1,160.00 points - to end the session at 26,720.00.

Lagging names

  • Next Vision Stabilized Systems (TASE:NXSN) fell 7.13% - down 2,810.00 points - to 36,600.00.
  • Tower Semiconductor Ltd (TASE:TSEM) declined 5.80% - off 2,400.00 points - to 39,000.00.
  • Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd (TASE:TEVA) lost 3.82% - slipping 400.00 points - to 10,060.00.

On breadth, advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange by 282 to 194, while 73 stocks finished unchanged.

Two names in the session reached new highs: Elbit Systems moved to an all-time high, rising 4.97% to 266,000.00, and Clal Insurance also recorded an all-time high after gaining 4.54% to 26,720.00.

Commodities and currencies

Commodity markets showed modest moves. Crude oil for April delivery fell 0.34% or 0.25 to $74.31 a barrel. Brent oil for May delivery was down 0.34% or 0.28 at $81.12 a barrel. The April Gold Futures contract climbed 0.66% or 34.00 to trade at 5,157.70 a troy ounce.

In currency markets, USD/ILS declined 0.54% to 3.07 and EUR/ILS fell 0.33% to 3.57. The US Dollar Index Futures eased 0.22% to 98.79.

Wednesday's session presented a contrast between a small negative on the headline index and pockets of strong gains among select large caps. Sector pressure from Banking, Real Estate and Biomedical names weighed on the benchmark, even as individual stocks in technology, defense and insurance attracted buyer interest.

Risks

  • Sector concentration in Banking, Real Estate and Biomed could continue to exert downside pressure on the TA 35 if those groups extend losses - impacts Financials, Real Estate and Healthcare sectors.
  • Declines in individual large-cap industrial and pharmaceutical names may weigh on investor sentiment and headline index performance - impacts Industrials and Healthcare sectors.
  • Commodity and currency swings, including movements in oil and the US Dollar Index Futures, could create volatility for equity sectors sensitive to input costs and currency exposure - impacts Energy, Materials and exporters.
