Taiwan market inches to fresh record as select optoelectronics and services names rally

The Taiwan market closed higher on Monday, with the Taiwan Weighted index recording a new all-time high despite a flat percentage change. Gains in Optoelectronic, Information Services and Financials stocks powered advances among individual names, while several large-cap technology and components names posted steep declines. Commodity and currency moves included sharp jumps in oil and notable shifts in FX and the US Dollar Index Futures.

Key Points

  • Taiwan Weighted recorded a new all-time high at the close, with the percentage change shown as 0.00%.
  • Top gainers included Amtran Technology (TW:2489), ChipMOS Technologies (TW:8150) and LIWANLI Innovation (TW:3054), each up 10.00%.
  • Largest decliners included Radiant Opto-Electronics (TW:6176), Lite-On Technology (TW:2301) and Yeong Guan Energy Technology Group (TW:1589), which fell by roughly 9.8-9.9%.

Taiwan's share market ended Monday with gains in select sectors as the Taiwan Weighted index recorded a new all-time high at the close, even as the headline percentage change registered at 0.00%.

Sectors making positive contributions included Optoelectronic, Information Services and Financials, which underpinned much of the session's upside in individual issues. At the same time, the session featured sharp moves in both directions among individual stocks.

Among the best-performing issues on the Taiwan Weighted, Amtran Technology Co Ltd (TW:2489) led the gains, jumping 10.00% - a rise of 3.60 points - to finish at 39.60. ChipMOS Technologies (TW:8150) also climbed 10.00% or 6.50 points to close at 71.50, and LIWANLI Innovation Co Ltd (TW:3054) rose 10.00% or 3.45 points to end the session at 37.95.

Conversely, several names moved sharply lower. Radiant Opto-Electronics Corp (TW:6176) fell 9.96% or 13.50 points to close at 122.00, Lite-On Technology Corp (TW:2301) declined 9.90% or 19.00 points to 173.00 at the close, and Yeong Guan Energy Technology Group Co Ltd (TW:1589) dropped 9.82% or 1.35 points to finish at 12.40.

Market breadth figures recorded an unusual reading: "Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Taiwan Stock Exchange by 0 to 0." The session produced several notable price milestones for individual companies. Shares of Amtran Technology Co Ltd (TW:2489) rose to all-time highs on the day, increasing 10.00% or 3.60 points to 39.60. LIWANLI Innovation Co Ltd (TW:3054) reached a 5-year high, gaining 10.00% or 3.45 points to 37.95. At the other extreme, shares of Yeong Guan Energy Technology Group Co Ltd (TW:1589) fell to all-time lows, sliding 9.82% or 1.35 points to 12.40.

Commodities markets recorded strong moves during the session. Crude oil for April delivery was up 6.80% or 4.56 to $71.58 a barrel. Brent oil for May delivery rose 7.19% or 5.24 to $78.11 a barrel. Precious metals also saw gains, with the April Gold Futures contract up 2.50% or 131.41 to trade at $5,379.31 a troy ounce.

Currency and index moves included USD/TWD trading higher by 0.52% to 31.55, while TWD/CNY was unchanged at 0.27% to 0.22. The US Dollar Index Futures rose 0.44% to 97.99.

Overall, the close left the headline Taiwan Weighted at a fresh record level even though the numerical percent change showed as 0.00%. The session was characterized by concentrated advances among several mid-cap and technology suppliers, offset by steep declines in a subset of other industrial and optoelectronics components names.

Risks

  • Concentrated moves in a small group of stocks could increase volatility for the Taiwan market - this affects equities and sectors such as optoelectronics and industrial components.
  • Steep single-day declines among several companies introduce downside risk for portfolios with exposure to those names and to the broader technology and optoelectronics sectors.
  • Large intraday commodity price swings, such as the sharp rises in crude and Brent oil, may add input-cost pressure for energy-dependent sectors and weigh on sentiment.
