Taiwan benchmark climbs to record as glass, plastics and cement groups lead gains

Taiwan Weighted posts 1.61% advance to a fresh all-time high; select names surge while several stocks post double-digit declines

Taiwan benchmark climbs to record as glass, plastics and cement groups lead gains

Taiwan equities closed higher on Monday, with the Taiwan Weighted index rising 1.61% to a new record. Strength in Glass, Plastic and Cement & Glass sectors powered the advance. Several individual stocks recorded sharp moves in both directions, while energy and precious metals futures moved lower and higher respectively. Currency and dollar-index moves were modest.

Taiwan shares finished the trading session higher on Monday, driven by strong performances in the Glass, Plastic and Cement & Glass sectors. At the close, the Taiwan Weighted advanced 1.61% and registered a new all-time high.

Leading the gainers on the Taiwan Weighted were Taiwan Glass Ind Corp (TW:1802), which climbed 9.93% - equal to a rise of 4.25 points - to finish the session at 47.05. Enlight Corp (TW:2438) added 9.88%, or 2.05 points, to close at 22.80. CviLux Corp (TW:8103) rose 9.83%, a gain of 9.80 points, to trade at 109.50 by the end of trading.

There were also pronounced declines among several names. Solytech Enterprise Corp (TW:1471) fell 10.00%, losing 1.20 points to end at 10.80. Bestec Power Electronics Co Ltd (TW:3308) was down 9.73%, a drop of 2.30 points, to 21.35. PCL Technologies Inc (TW:4977) declined 9.71%, or 13.50 points, finishing the day at 125.50.

The market breadth reading included an atypical note in the session commentary: falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Taiwan Stock Exchange by 0 to 0.

Separately, shares of CviLux Corp (TW:8103) reached an all-time high in the session, rising 9.83% or 9.80 points to 109.50.


Commodity prices showed mixed moves during the wider trading day. Crude oil for April delivery declined 1.08%, down 0.72 to $65.76 a barrel. Brent oil for May delivery fell 1.00%, sliding 0.71 to $70.59 a barrel. In contrast, the April Gold Futures contract advanced 1.95%, gaining 99.06 to trade at $5,179.96 a troy ounce.

Currency markets recorded small shifts against the Taiwan dollar. USD/TWD was down 0.25% at 31.44. The TWD/CNY pair was recorded as unchanged 0.14% to 0.22. The US Dollar Index Futures moved lower, down 0.32% at 97.41.


Market participants may note the pronounced stock-specific moves in both directions during a session in which the benchmark index hit a record high. The session's commodity and currency moves were modest by comparison.
