OpenAI on Thursday introduced a new health-focused capability for ChatGPT that allows users in the United States to connect their personal medical records and Apple Health data to the chatbot. The update is designed to let users pull together clinical and wearable information within conversations with the AI.

Under the new functionality, ChatGPT can link Apple Health data and medical records from supported US hospital systems as well as from One Medical and Function Health. The company noted that more than 300 million people consult ChatGPT weekly for health-related questions, motivating the expansion of data connectivity.

Once connected, users can instruct ChatGPT to perform practical review tasks - for example, comparing current lab results with prior tests, summarizing changes since a medical appointment, or evaluating how sleep and activity trends correspond with daily routines. The capability is accessible to logged-in ChatGPT users aged 18 and older in the United States via both web and iOS platforms, and it is available across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro subscription tiers.

OpenAI reported that early testing revealed over 70% of health-related conversations occurred outside a dedicated health workspace. That finding influenced the company’s decision to integrate the new health access across general ChatGPT conversations, rather than confining it to a separate environment. The company also emphasized that users must explicitly grant permission before ChatGPT can access any connected health information.

On the model side, OpenAI said it has deployed GPT-5.6 Sol for paid users, describing it as its most capable model for health-related tasks to date. Free users continue to have access to GPT-5.5 Instant. The company worked with physicians to develop evaluation criteria that measure accuracy, safety, communication, and completeness. In those assessments, GPT-5.6 Sol performed better than GPT-5.5 on HealthBench Professional, an evaluation designed to gauge AI performance on health tasks.

Regarding data handling, OpenAI said connected medical records and Apple Health information are not used to train its foundation models and are not employed for advertisement targeting. It stated that ChatGPT conversations are encrypted both at rest and in transit, and that additional encryption protections apply specifically to health information.

Users retain control over their connections and can disconnect health data at any time. When a connection is terminated, data synced from that source is deleted from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days. The company also noted that the new health feature is not yet available in Codex.
