SEOUL, March 19 - Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Thursday that the electric vehicle maker might reach the tape out milestone for its next-generation AI6 chips in December. "With some luck and acceleration using AI, we might be able to tape out AI6 in December," Musk wrote on his social media platform X when asked about the timing for the final design.
The tape out stage denotes the point at which a chip design is finalized and forwarded to a semiconductor factory for manufacturing. Musk previously said that Samsung Electronics would produce the AI6 chips after the Korean firm won a $16.5 billion contract to supply artificial intelligence chips to Tesla.
A Samsung executive added on Wednesday that the company intends to produce Tesla’s chips using Samsung’s advanced 2-nanometer process, with plans to commence production in the second half of 2027. The AI6 chips are expected to be deployed in Tesla’s self-driving vehicles and in humanoid robots that the automaker has associated with its new Taylor, Texas factory.
Taken together, the comments outline a timeline in which Tesla hopes to complete final design work by the end of this year, while mass production by Samsung would not begin until several years later. Musk’s statement tied the December timing to the application of AI in accelerating development work, reflecting a conditional outlook on the schedule.
