Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company may complete the final design - or 'tape out' - of its next-generation AI6 chips in December, a step that would enable factory production. Samsung Electronics is slated to manufacture the chips using its advanced 2-nanometer process, with the Korean firm indicating production is planned for the second half of 2027 under a $16.5 billion supply pact.

Key Points

  • Elon Musk said Tesla may be able to 'tape out' the AI6 chip design in December, contingent on accelerated development using AI.
  • Samsung Electronics has a $16.5 billion agreement to supply AI chips to Tesla and plans to manufacture Tesla chips on its advanced 2-nanometer process.
  • Samsung expects to start producing the Tesla chips in the second half of 2027; the chips are likely intended for Tesla’s self-driving cars and humanoid robots at its Taylor, Texas facility.

SEOUL, March 19 - Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Thursday that the electric vehicle maker might reach the tape out milestone for its next-generation AI6 chips in December. "With some luck and acceleration using AI, we might be able to tape out AI6 in December," Musk wrote on his social media platform X when asked about the timing for the final design.

The tape out stage denotes the point at which a chip design is finalized and forwarded to a semiconductor factory for manufacturing. Musk previously said that Samsung Electronics would produce the AI6 chips after the Korean firm won a $16.5 billion contract to supply artificial intelligence chips to Tesla.

A Samsung executive added on Wednesday that the company intends to produce Tesla’s chips using Samsung’s advanced 2-nanometer process, with plans to commence production in the second half of 2027. The AI6 chips are expected to be deployed in Tesla’s self-driving vehicles and in humanoid robots that the automaker has associated with its new Taylor, Texas factory.

Taken together, the comments outline a timeline in which Tesla hopes to complete final design work by the end of this year, while mass production by Samsung would not begin until several years later. Musk’s statement tied the December timing to the application of AI in accelerating development work, reflecting a conditional outlook on the schedule.

Contextual note: Information above reflects statements made by Elon Musk and a Samsung executive regarding design and manufacturing timing for the AI6 chips, and the stated $16.5 billion supply agreement for AI chips between Samsung and Tesla.

Risks

  • Timeline uncertainty - Musk linked the December tape out to 'some luck and acceleration,' indicating the schedule is conditional and not guaranteed; this affects technology and automotive sectors.
  • Manufacturing lead time - Samsung’s planned production in the second half of 2027 creates a multi-year gap between potential design finalization and mass production, posing execution and supply risks for semiconductor and automation markets.
  • Dependence on a single supplier agreement - Tesla’s reliance on Samsung under the $16.5 billion deal concentrates manufacturing risk within the semiconductor supply chain and could affect deployment timelines for automotive and robotics applications.
