U.S. equity markets closed mixed on Friday with the Dow Jones Industrial Average edging up 0.10%, the S&P 500 eking out a 0.05% gain and the Nasdaq Composite retreating 0.22%. Sector rotation drove the split, as gains in Utilities, Basic Materials and Industrials were offset by losses in Technology, Telecoms and Consumer Services. Market breadth favored advancers on both exchanges, while volatility eased slightly and commodities and currency markets showed modest moves.

Key Points

  • Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.10%, S&P 500 up 0.05%, Nasdaq Composite down 0.22%
  • Strong sectors: Utilities, Basic Materials, Industrials; Weak sectors: Technology, Telecoms, Consumer Services
  • Market breadth favored advancing issues on both the NYSE and Nasdaq; volatility as measured by the VIX declined to 20.62

U.S. stock indexes finished a fractured session on Friday, with sector performance dictating a split outcome across the major averages. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.10%, the S&P 500 rose 0.05% and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.22% at the New York close.

Sector-level strength in Utilities, Basic Materials and Industrials provided upward pressure on parts of the tape, while declines in Technology, Telecoms and Consumer Services weighed on overall market breadth. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners on both exchanges, and volatility retreated modestly by the end of trading.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery were reported up 2.11% or 104.56 to $5,052.96 a troy ounce. Trading reflected a market split in leadership across sectors and capitalizations. Gains in Utilities, Basic Materials and Industrials buoyed a portion of the market, but strength there was counterbalanced by losses in Technology, Telecoms and Consumer Services, producing the mixed index results at the close.

Risks

  • Sector concentration risk as losses in Technology, Telecoms and Consumer Services could pressure growth-oriented portions of the market - impacting technology and consumer sectors
  • Commodity and currency moves could introduce additional market uncertainty given notable shifts in Gold Futures and mixed crude prices - relevant to materials, energy and currency-sensitive sectors
  • High single-stock volatility among small-cap and biotech names increases idiosyncratic risk for investors exposed to those securities - particularly relevant for Nasdaq-listed smaller companies
