  • Commodities and FX moved unevenly: December gold fell, October US crude rose notably, Brent was flat, USD/MXN and EUR/MXN ticked higher, and the US Dollar Index futures declined.

Mexico's benchmark equity gauge finished marginally lower on Monday, with sector-level pressure from Industrials, Consumer Goods & Services and Consumer Staples contributing to the slide. At the close, the S&P/BMV IPC was down 0.08%.

Among the index constituents, Orbia Advance Corporation SAB de CV (BMV:ORBIA) led gains, rising 2.26% or 0.47 points to finish at 21.26. Sigma Foods SAB de CV (BMV:SIGMAFA) followed, up 1.80% or 0.33 points to 18.68, while Grupo Mexico, S.A.B. De C.V. (BMV:GMEXICOB) advanced 1.48% or 3.40 points to close at 232.59.

On the downside, Megacable Holdings, S.A.B. De C.V. (BMV:MEGACPO) was the weakest performer, declining 4.38% or 2.38 points to end the session at 51.96. Gentera SAB de CV (BMV:GENTERA) slid 4.22% or 1.79 points to 40.66, and Controladora Vuela Compania de Aviacion SAB de CV (BMV:VOLARA) fell 4.15% or 0.48 points to close at 11.08.

By breadth, decliners outnumbered advancers on the Mexico Stock Exchange, with 140 names down versus 85 advancing, and 15 issues finishing unchanged.

Commodities showed notable moves during the session. Gold Futures for December delivery dropped 0.72% or 32.60 to $4,497.30 a troy ounce. Crude oil for October delivery climbed 3.49% or 2.91 to $86.31 a barrel, while the December Brent contract edged down 0.01% or 0.01 to trade at $90.73 a barrel.

Currency pairs finished with modest changes. USD/MXN rose 0.11% to 17.00, and EUR/MXN increased 0.12% to 19.75. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.29% at 99.37.

This session's price action reflected a narrow overall move in the benchmark index, with several individual large-cap stocks producing outsized contributions to the daily direction. Sector-level weakness in Industrials and consumer-oriented segments coincided with strength in select materials and mining-related names, as reflected in the outperformance of Grupo Mexico.

Traders and analysts monitoring the market will note the mixed backdrop across commodities, currencies and equities, which together shaped a modestly negative close for the S&P/BMV IPC.

Risks

  • Commodity price volatility - movements in crude oil and gold can affect mining, industrial and consumer sectors.
  • Currency fluctuations - modest depreciation of the peso versus the dollar and euro may influence export-dependent and imported-input sensitive firms.
  • Sector-specific weakness - continued declines in Industrials, Consumer Goods & Services and Consumer Staples could weigh on related equities and market breadth.
