U.K. equities ended Friday's trading session with modest gains as a handful of sectors outperformed and lifted the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 higher by 0.31% at the close in London.
Among sector contributors, Software & Computer Services, Aerospace & Defense and Mining were the principal drivers pushing the market up during the session. Market breadth was positive: advancing issues on the London Stock Exchange outnumbered decliners by 936 to 854, while 517 stocks finished unchanged.
Top gainers
Relx PLC (LON:REL) led the winners on the index, rising 9.90% - a 203.13 point increase - to finish at 2,255.13. Advertising and communications group WPP PLC (LON:WPP) added 5.25%, closing at 272.90 after a 13.60 point uplift. Investment company 3I Group PLC (LON:III) was also among the stronger performers, climbing 5.11% or 167.00 points to end the session at 3,436.00.
Notable decliners
On the downside, Flutter Entertainment PLC (LON:FLTRF) fell sharply, losing 10.89% - 1,143.00 points - to close at 9,352.00. The stock moved to a three-year low during the session. Entain PLC (LON:ENT) declined 4.74% or 28.20 points to finish at 567.00, while NatWest Group PLC (LON:NWG) slipped 2.49% - 14.80 points - to end at 580.20.
Commodities and currency moves
Commodity markets were mixed. Gold futures for April delivery rose 1.70%, an increase of 84.19, to trade at 5,032.59 a troy ounce. In energy markets, crude oil for March delivery edged down 0.05% or 0.03 to $62.81 a barrel, whereas the April Brent contract was up 0.21% or 0.14, changing hands at $67.66 a barrel.
Currency pairs showed limited movement. GBP/USD was effectively flat, changing 0.20% to 1.36, and EUR/GBP was unchanged, moving 0.15% to 0.87. The US Dollar Index Futures closed down 0.07% at 96.77.
Overall, the session combined sector-led advances with select, sizeable declines among individual large-cap names, while commodities and FX recorded mixed outcomes.
