Jakarta Stocks Slip as Financials, Infrastructure and Agriculture Weigh on Market

The IDX Composite Index closed lower by 0.12% on Friday as losses in the Financials, Infrastructure and Agriculture sectors pressured the market. Despite notable individual advances from several small-cap names, decliners outnumbered advancers and currency and commodity moves were modestly tilted toward a firmer U.S. dollar and higher crude prices.

Key Points

  • IDX Composite closed down 0.12% as losses in Financials, Infrastructure and Agriculture weighed on the market.
  • Market breadth favored decliners: 385 stocks fell versus 309 advancers, with 165 unchanged.
  • Individual large percentage moves included Bakrie & Brothers (JK:BNBR) up 27.95% and Satria Mega Kencana (JK:SOTS) down 14.86%.

Summary: Indonesia's benchmark index finished the session in negative territory, with sectoral weakness in Financials, Infrastructure and Agriculture contributing to the retreat. While a handful of stocks delivered strong percentage gains, a larger cohort of issues fell by session end.

The IDX Composite Index in Jakarta closed down 0.12% on Friday. Market breadth showed more falling names than rising ones, with 385 stocks declining against 309 that advanced. Another 165 issues ended the session unchanged.

Among the most pronounced winners were Bakrie & Brothers Tbk (JK:BNBR), Widodo Makmur Unggas Tbk PT (JK:WMUU) and Bank Dinar Indonesia Tbk (JK:DNAR). Bakrie & Brothers led the gainers, adding 27.95% to finish at 206.00. Widodo Makmur Unggas rose 18.18% to close at 91.00, reaching a three-year high in the process, and Bank Dinar Indonesia climbed 16.67% to 161.00.

On the downside, Satria Mega Kencana Tbk PT (JK:SOTS) fell 14.86% to 1,260.00, marking one of the session's steepest drops. Indospring Tbk (JK:INDS) declined 14.84% to 1,090.00 and Armada Berjaya Trans Tbk PT (JK:JAYA) lost 14.68% to close at 186.00.

Commodity markets showed modest strength during the session. Crude oil for April delivery rose 1.12% or $0.73 to $65.94 a barrel. Brent oil for May delivery increased 0.96% or $0.68 to $71.52 a barrel. April gold futures were effectively flat, ticking up $0.06 to $5,194.26 a troy ounce.

Currency moves included a softer rupiah against the U.S. dollar and the Australian dollar. The USD/IDR rate was up 0.35% at 16,795.40, while AUD/IDR rose 0.40% to 11,946.74. The U.S. Dollar Index Futures was down 0.13% at 97.61.

The session highlighted a market with mixed single-stock momentum but overall negative bias. Sector-level weakness in Financials, Infrastructure and Agriculture was the primary driver of the index's modest decline, even as select small-cap names posted double-digit percentage gains.

Market breadth and movers:

  • Decliners: 385
  • Advancers: 309
  • Unchanged: 165
  • Notable gainers: JK:BNBR (+27.95% to 206.00), JK:WMUU (+18.18% to 91.00, three-year high), JK:DNAR (+16.67% to 161.00)
  • Notable losers: JK:SOTS (-14.86% to 1,260.00), JK:INDS (-14.84% to 1,090.00), JK:JAYA (-14.68% to 186.00)

Investors and market observers will note the divergence between a handful of high-percentage winners and a broader universe of decliners, as well as commodity and currency moves that were present but not extreme. The index's modest decline reflects that mix.

Risks

  • Sector weakness - Continued declines in Financials, Infrastructure and Agriculture may exert additional downward pressure on the index, affecting related stocks and investors exposed to those sectors.
  • Market breadth risk - The larger number of falling stocks versus advancing ones suggests uneven participation and potential vulnerability to broader sell-offs.
  • Currency and commodity sensitivity - Moves in USD/IDR, AUD/IDR and oil prices could influence corporate costs and revenues for import-dependent firms and energy-linked businesses.
