Google announced an expansion of its Gemini Spark assistant today, releasing a macOS beta and widening the suite of third-party applications the assistant can connect to. The company also said Gemini Spark can now track topics and respond to events in real time across a wide set of information sources.
The macOS beta enables the AI to automate tasks on the desktop, including file organization and the creation of spreadsheets using documents stored locally. The feature permits Gemini Spark to access both desktop files and Google Workspace content concurrently, but only after the user grants permission. Google said a forthcoming update will add the capability to run those desktop tasks remotely from mobile devices.
Availability for the macOS beta is currently limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and older and is being offered initially in the United States. Interested users can obtain the application from gemini.google/mac.
Google also expanded the roster of connected applications that Gemini Spark can interact with. The newly supported services include Google Tasks, Google Keep, Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals. According to Google, the expanded integrations permit a range of practical actions - converting notes into task lists, designing promotional materials, sharing files, making restaurant reservations, placing grocery orders and scheduling apartment viewings.
The company said these connected app integrations will become available on web and mobile over the coming week, while support on macOS will follow in the weeks after that initial rollout.
In addition to the macOS and app integration news, Gemini Spark has been updated to provide real-time topic tracking. The assistant can monitor blogs, news sites, social media, finance feeds, shopping channels, weather updates, sports coverage and email, and users can request alerts when specified conditions are met. Examples offered include notifications tied to stock price thresholds or the results of sports matches.
