German Markets Close Higher as Utilities, Insurance and Food & Beverages Lead Gains

Frankfurt stocks finished the session in positive territory, with the benchmark DAX climbing 0.67%. The MDAX and TecDAX outperformed the main index, gaining 1.78% and 1.11% respectively, driven by strong showings in utilities, insurance and consumer-oriented names. Energy-related commodities and precious metals also moved higher, while currency pairs and the US Dollar Index showed modest changes.

At the close, the DAX advanced 0.67%. Mid-cap stocks outperformed, with the MDAX rising 1.78%, and the TecDAX adding 1.11%.

Top movers on the DAX

  • Hannover Rueck SE (ETR:HNRGn) led DAX gains, finishing up 4.03% or 10.60 points at 273.80.
  • E.ON SE (ETR:EONGn) climbed 3.20% or 0.63 points to close at 20.30.
  • Brenntag AG (ETR:BNRGn) rose 2.64% or 1.28 points to finish at 49.69.

Lagging names on the DAX

  • Beiersdorf AG O.N. (ETR:BEIG) was the weakest of the group, down 2.41% or 1.84 points to 74.56 at the close.
  • Scout24 AG (ETR:G24n) slipped 1.56% or 1.10 points to end at 69.55.
  • Daimler Truck Holding AG (ETR:DTGGe) declined 1.44% or 0.61 points to 41.71.

MDAX and TecDAX highlights

  • On the MDAX, Sartorius AG VZO O.N. (ETR:SATG_p) led gains with a 7.94% increase to 225.60.
  • Nordex SE O.N. (ETR:NDXG) also posted a strong move, up 6.32% to 46.08.
  • Fraport AG (ETR:FRAG) rose 5.86% to close at 75.85.
  • Delivery Hero AG (ETR:DHER) was among the MDAX decliners, down 2.50% to 16.35.
  • Bechtle AG (ETR:BC8G) lost 1.55% to settle at 30.52.
  • United Internet AG NA (ETR:UTDI) fell 1.29% to 26.08 at the close.

On the TecDAX, the top performers included Sartorius AG VZO O.N. (ETR:SATG_p), which climbed 7.94% to 225.60, SMA Solar Technology AG (ETR:S92G) which gained 6.47% to 36.20, and Nordex SE O.N. (ETR:NDXG) which rose 6.32% to 46.08. Among the laggards, Elmos Semiconductor AG (ETR:ELGG) fell 2.15% to 136.80, Bechtle AG (ETR:BC8G) was down 1.55% to 30.52 and Cancom SE O.N. (ETR:COKG) declined 1.32% to 22.50 at the close.

Market breadth and notable price levels

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, with 376 stocks higher, 238 lower and 30 unchanged.

Several individual share price milestones were recorded during the session. Beiersdorf AG O.N. (ETR:BEIG) fell to 5-year lows, declining 2.41% or 1.84 to 74.56. In contrast, shares of E.ON SE (ETR:EONGn) rose to 5-year highs, climbing 3.20% or 0.63 to 20.30. Nordex SE O.N. (ETR:NDXG) reached all-time highs, advancing 6.32% or 2.74 to 46.08. Bechtle AG (ETR:BC8G) fell to 52-week lows, down 1.55% or 0.48 to 30.52.

Volatility, commodities and currencies

The DAX volatility index, which measures implied volatility of DAX options, declined 7.16% to 26.99.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery increased 0.12% or 6.06 to $5,008.26 a troy ounce. Energy contracts were also firmer: crude oil for May delivery rose 2.65% or 2.45 to $94.91 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract gained 2.44% or 2.45 to trade at $102.66 a barrel.

On the currency front, EUR/USD was essentially unchanged, moving 0.19% to 1.15, and EUR/GBP was steady with a 0.02% change to 0.86. The US Dollar Index Futures edged lower by 0.09% to 99.38.
