Frankfurt gains as tech and industrial names lead; DAX climbs 2.25%

Technology, transportation and industrial stocks drive German indices higher as volatility ticks up and commodities swing

Frankfurt gains as tech and industrial names lead; DAX climbs 2.25%

German equities closed higher Tuesday in Frankfurt, with the benchmark DAX rising 2.25% and broader mid-cap and tech indexes also advancing. Technology, Transportation & Logistics and Industrials were the sectors that provided the largest lift to the market. Several individual names posted double-digit percentage moves, while the DAX volatility gauge reached a six-month high.

German stock markets ended Tuesday's session with strength as gains in Technology, Transportation & Logistics and Industrials pushed major indexes into positive territory.

At the close in Frankfurt, the DAX added 2.25%, the MDAX climbed 3.21% and the TecDAX increased 1.58%.


Top movers on the DAX

The strongest performers on the DAX were Infineon Technologies AG NA O.N. (ETR:IFXGn), which rose 6.07% or 2.37 points to finish at 41.31; Siemens Energy AG (ETR:ENR1n), which gained 6.02% or 8.95 points to close at 157.70; and Bayer AG NA (ETR:BAYGN), up 5.41% or 2.04 points to end the session at 39.63.

On the downside, Scout24 AG (ETR:G24n) dropped 1.89% or 1.40 points to 72.80 at the close. SAP SE (ETR:SAPG) fell 1.33% or 2.28 points to finish at 169.60, and Deutsche Boerse AG (ETR:DB1Gn) slipped 0.62% or 1.50 points to 240.80.


Performance across the MDAX and TecDAX

On the MDAX, Aixtron SE (ETR:AIXGn) led gains, rising 10.59% to 31.63. Deutsche Lufthansa AG (ETR:LHAG) was up 7.89% to settle at 8.20, and AUTO1 Group SE (ETR:AG1G) climbed 7.85% to close at 16.76.

MDAX laggards included TeamViewer AG (ETR:TMV), which fell 2.84% to 4.58 in late trade, Stroeer SE (ETR:SAXG), down 2.39% to 32.70, and K+S AG (ETR:SDFGn), which lost 2.23% to end at 15.32.

On the TecDAX, Aixtron SE (ETR:AIXGn) again topped the list with a 10.59% gain to 31.63. SUSS MicroTec SE (ETR:SMHNn) rose 6.34% to 54.55, and Infineon Technologies AG NA O.N. (ETR:IFXGn) added 6.07% to close at 41.31.

Among TecDAX decliners, Evotec AG O.N. (ETR:EVTG) was the weakest, down 10.65% to 4.71 in late trade. TeamViewer AG (ETR:TMV) lost 2.84% to settle at 4.58 and Nagarro SE (ETR:NA9n) declined 2.13% to 52.75 at the close.


Breadth, corporate highs and lows

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange by 455 to 178, with 23 shares unchanged at the close.

Aixtron SE (ETR:AIXGn) rose to 52-week highs, gaining 10.59% or 3.03 to reach 31.63. Conversely, Evotec AG O.N. (ETR:EVTG) fell to five-year lows, declining 10.65% or 0.56 to 4.71.


Volatility, commodities and currencies

The DAX volatility index, which measures implied volatility of DAX options, increased 0.42% to 28.49, marking a new six-month high.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery rose 2.67% or 136.30 to $5,240.00 a troy ounce. Crude oil for April delivery fell 15.35% or 14.55 to $80.22 a barrel, while the May Brent contract declined 14.95% or 14.79 to $84.17 a barrel.

On foreign exchange markets, EUR/USD was effectively unchanged, moving 0.17% to 1.17, and EUR/GBP was unchanged by 0.05% at 0.87. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.63% at 98.55.


Market participants will note the strength among technology and industrial names that helped lift major German benchmarks, even as volatility and commodity prices moved notably during the session.
