Shares of Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises Inc (NYSE: BW) rose 6.4% in premarket trading on Monday following the start of analyst coverage by Needham at a Buy rating and a $20 price target.
Needham analyst Sean Milligan opened coverage of the industrial equipment manufacturer and identified two primary factors underpinning the bullish stance: an improved corporate balance sheet and recent contract wins. Milligan highlighted a $2.4 billion FastPower award with Base Electron that increased the companys backlog to roughly $2.6 billion.
The analyst also noted the expectation that a second project will reach final notice to proceed before year-end 2026. That pending milestone is presented as part of the companys near-term operational outlook and contributes to the elevated backlog figure.
Milligan suggested the FastPower offering has the potential to evolve into a repeatable platform for data-center generation if industry dynamics change - specifically, as gas-turbine lead times lengthen and combined-cycle costs rise. He argued that such a development could support a re-rating of the shares from current levels.
Assessing current valuation, Milligan referenced a $7.16 share price level and indicated that, at that level, the market appears to be pricing in the core business plus the net present value of the Base Electron project. He added that the shares receive limited valuation credit for potential expansion into a quoted $14 billion-plus pipeline in 2027 and beyond, or for BrightLoop in 2028 and beyond.
The $20 price target established by Needham implies roughly 179% upside from the share price cited by the analyst. That differential underpins Needhams Buy recommendation.
Market and sector context
- The move directly affects the companys equity and is relevant to investors tracking industrial equipment and power-generation suppliers.
- Potential downstream impact touches data-center power solutions and energy project procurement decisions if FastPower proves repeatable.
What remains to be resolved
- The timing and outcome of the second projects final notice to proceed, expected before year-end 2026, is a key near-term milestone.
- The market has yet to price in broader pipeline expansion or BrightLoop contributions beyond the Base Electron award, per the analysts assessment.
