Australian equities ended the trading day higher, with the S&P/ASX 200 rising 0.59% as strength in Metals & Mining, Materials and Resources sectors outweighed losses in select real estate and energy-related stocks. Market breadth was positive, volatility eased and commodity prices were mixed amid modest currency moves.

Australian shares finished higher on Wednesday, with the S&P/ASX 200 closing up 0.59% in Sydney as gains concentrated in Metals & Mining, Materials and Resources sectors pushed the benchmark index upward.

Top movers on the benchmark

The session's largest winners included Lynas Rare Earths Ltd (ASX:LYC), which climbed 16.08% or 2.85 points to finish at 20.57. Iluka Resources Ltd (ASX:ILU) rallied 10.02% or 0.61 points to close at 6.70, while Champion Iron Ltd (ASX:CIA) rose 7.58% or 0.35 points to end the day at 4.97.

Largest decliners

On the downside, Centuria Capital Ltd (ASX:CNI) fell 6.59% or 0.12 points to close at 1.63. AGL Energy Ltd (ASX:AGL) declined 5.45% or 0.52 points to finish at 9.03, and GQG Partners Inc DRC (ASX:GQG) slipped 5.37% or 0.10 points to end at 1.81.

Market breadth and volatility

Rising issues outnumbered decliners on the Sydney exchange, with 616 stocks advancing versus 520 falling; 362 stocks finished unchanged. The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, a gauge of implied volatility on S&P/ASX 200 options, declined 5.89% to 15.66.


Commodities and currency

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery were down 0.68% or 35.46 to $5,206.64 a troy ounce. Crude oil for April delivery eased 0.17% or 0.14 to $83.31 a barrel, while the May Brent contract fell 0.89% or 0.78 to trade at $87.02 a barrel.

Currency moves were modest: AUD/USD rose 0.74% to 0.72 and AUD/JPY increased 0.81% to 113.44. The US Dollar Index Futures ticked down 0.04% to 98.76.


Implications and context

The session was marked by concentrated gains among specialty minerals and mining-related names, which supported the index advance, while select real estate and energy-related stocks were among the weakest performers. Implied volatility dropped, reflecting reduced near-term option market nervousness on the benchmark.
