Greece's stock market finished the trading session lower on Friday, with losses concentrated in the Banking, Telecoms and Household sectors and the Athens General Composite shedding 1.15% by the close in Athens.
Market breadth was tilted toward declines: 97 stocks fell compared with 24 that advanced, and 11 issues ended the day unchanged. The uneven distribution of moves underscored the downward pressure across a range of names despite a handful of notable winners.
Top performers
- Viohalco SA (AT:VIOH) led gains on the index, rising 2.87% - a 0.44 point increase - to close at 15.78.
- Cenergy Holdings SA (AT:CENEr) added 2.56%, up 0.55 points to finish at 22.00.
- Hellenic Exchanges Athens Stock Exchange SA (AT:EXCr) climbed 2.24%, a 0.15 point move, to end at 6.85.
According to closing prices, both Viohalco (AT:VIOH) and Cenergy (AT:CENEr) reached all-time highs on the session, each advancing to record levels noted above.
Heaviest losers
- Ekter (AT:EKTr) was the weakest performer among the main names, down 4.06% or 0.17 points to finish at 3.90.
- National Bank of Greece SA (AT:NBGr) fell 3.97%, a decline of 0.57 points, to close at 13.78.
- Ellaktor SA (AT:HELr) slipped 3.45%, losing 0.05 points to end the day at 1.29.
Commodities and currencies
Outside equities, commodity contracts moved higher on the session. Gold Futures for April delivery rose 1.15% - an increase of 59.69 - to $5,253.89 a troy ounce. Crude oil for April delivery gained 2.68%, up $1.75, settling at $66.96 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract increased 2.61% or $1.85 to trade at $72.69 a barrel.
Foreign exchange pairs showed minimal net change; EUR/USD was recorded as unchanged at 0.08% to 1.18 and EUR/GBP was unchanged at 0.29% to 0.88. The US Dollar Index Futures moved lower by 0.07% to 97.67.
This combination of sector-specific weakness in banking, telecoms and household names, broad market declines in Athens and concurrent moves in commodities and FX framed trading on Friday, leaving the Athens General Composite down 1.15% at the close.
