Athens bourse edges up as banking, construction and travel stocks lead gains

Greece's main benchmark, the Athens General Composite, closed 0.51% higher on Thursday, led by gains in the Banking, Construction and Travel sectors. Several individual names posted strong rises while others finished lower. Trading breadth on the exchange was balanced with a number of unchanged issues. Commodity and FX markets saw notable moves, including a fall in gold futures and a sharp rise in U.S. crude.

Greece's equity market finished higher on Thursday, with the Athens General Composite up 0.51% at the close in Athens as gains concentrated in the Banking, Construction and Travel sectors pushed the index higher.

Among the best performers on the session, Ekter (AT:EKTr) led the advance, finishing up 4.90% - a 0.18-point gain to close at 3.75. Piraeus Port (AT:OLPr) added 4.62%, rising 1.70 points to end the day at 38.50. Intralot Integrated Lottery Systems and Services SA (AT:BYLOTr) also outperformed, gaining 4.37% or 0.04 points to finish at 0.95.

On the downside, Alumil (AT:ALMr) was the weakest listed name, slipping 3.45% or 0.20 points to close at 5.60. Cenergy Holdings SA (AT:CENEr) declined 3.13%, losing 0.65 points to finish at 20.15, while Quest Holdings (AT:IQTr) was down 2.89% or 0.19 points to 6.39 at the close.

Market breadth on the Athens Stock Exchange was balanced: advancing and declining issues were both 55, with 23 names unchanged at the session's end.


In commodities trading, April gold futures were lower, down 0.74% or 37.85 to $5,096.85 a troy ounce. Oil values rose sharply: crude oil for April delivery climbed 5.36% or $4.00 to $78.66 a barrel, and the May Brent contract increased 3.55% or $2.89 to trade at $84.29 a barrel.

Currency moves included EUR/USD slipping 0.53% to 1.16, while EUR/GBP was effectively flat, changing 0.07% to 0.87. The US Dollar Index Futures moved higher by 0.57%, trading at 99.29.
