June 8 - Apple laid out a broad set of software updates at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, centered on a redesigned personal assistant and a new wave of AI capabilities that will be woven into many of its core apps. The company positioned these changes as both conversational advances for the assistant and platform-wide additions that touch browsing, messaging, photos, home automation and parental controls.
Siri AI: a more conversational assistant
The centerpiece of the announcements was Siri AI, a reimagined, AI-driven personal assistant built into what Apple calls Apple Intelligence. The assistant can interpret personal context, analyze what is displayed on-screen, search the web, recognize images and perform tasks across different apps. Apple says the experience is more conversational, enabling users to refer back to prior interactions and sustain longer exchanges with the assistant.
Apple also introduced a dedicated Siri app. That app is intended to let users revisit conversations across devices and make use of visual intelligence and integrated writing tools across Apple platforms. A beta of Siri AI will be released later this year. Apple noted that the assistant will not initially be available on iOS and iPadOS in the European Union. In China, Siri AI and the other new Apple Intelligence features will be unavailable while Apple works through regulatory requirements.
Apple Intelligence and how it is delivered
Apple outlined a next generation of Apple Intelligence built on updated Apple Foundation Models. Those models were developed in collaboration with Google’s Gemini technology, according to Apple. The company said the models will operate both on users' devices and via Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, delivering improved reasoning and enhanced capabilities for understanding and generating images.
Apple emphasized a privacy-first stance for Apple Intelligence, stating that user data processed through these capabilities is not stored or accessible to the company. The company plans to integrate Apple Intelligence across multiple native apps, including Safari, Messages, Mail, Calendar and Phone. Examples Apple provided include automatic organization of browser tabs, webpage monitoring, natural-language creation of calendar events and contextual assistance during phone calls.
Apple Intelligence will also be added to Home and Shortcuts. In those apps, the company highlighted the ability to generate summaries of security camera footage, search recorded clips using natural language queries and create automations via simple text prompts.
Expanded child-safety tools
On the child-safety front, Apple introduced enhanced child accounts that will enable age-based safeguards by default. These safeguards include restrictions on access to adult websites and age-appropriate controls for media and App Store content. Parents will have the option to limit children to approved apps only.
Apple also rolled out an "Ask to Browse" feature that requires children to request parental permission before visiting new websites. Communication Safety was expanded to provide warnings to children and to blur images and videos that contain gore or violent content, extending earlier protections that focused on nudity. Parents will be able to schedule app access, set screen-time allowances and monitor device usage.
Image Playground and AI photo edits
Apple showed an updated Image Playground capable of generating photorealistic images from text prompts, transforming photos into varied styles and creating images that incorporate people from a user's photo library. New AI-driven photo editing tools were introduced, including an enhanced Cleanup function, an Extend tool to broaden image boundaries and Spatial Reframing, which allows users to adjust composition after a photo has been taken.
Liquid Glass design refinements
On the visual design side, Apple expanded customization for its Liquid Glass effect. The company added controls to adjust the appearance of Liquid Glass and redesigned app icons with additional Liquid Glass layers intended to make icons look sharper and more defined.
