Senior technical personnel from Anthropic are scheduled to attend a meeting with officials at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington on Monday, according to an administration official. The meeting follows a directive from the U.S. government issued late last week that ordered the artificial intelligence company to suspend access to its highest-tier models for foreign nationals, citing national security concerns.
Anthropic has engaged with government representatives virtually on an almost daily basis since the Trump administration first contacted the company on Friday, a person close to the company told Reuters. That routine of virtual discussions continued in the days after the order was issued.
Under the government directive, Anthropic was instructed to prevent any foreign national - whether located inside the United States or abroad - from accessing its latest models, identified by the company as Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Anthropic said on Friday that it would disable access to those models on a global basis in response to the order.
The administration's action rests on concern that a safeguard intended to stop Fable 5 from being misused could be circumvented. Specifically, the government believes there exists a method of bypassing, or "jailbreaking," a protective measure that would otherwise prevent Fable 5 from being used to identify software vulnerabilities, the company said.
Context and ongoing engagement
The scheduled in-person meeting at the Department of Commerce follows a period of near-daily virtual engagement between Anthropic technical staff and government officials, reflecting active, ongoing communication since the administration's initial outreach on Friday.
Company response
Anthropic said it will disable global access to its top-tier models in response to the government order. The company has publicly identified the affected models as Fable 5 and Mythos 5.
