UC3 - the joint venture representing UEFA and European football clubs - announced on Thursday that it has entered exclusive talks with Nike to secure the role of official match ball provider for every UEFA men’s club competition from 2027 through 2031.
A completed contract would represent the first time in 25 years that Nike would hold the official match ball agreement for UEFA men’s club play, taking over from Adidas, which has been the supplier since 2001.
The Financial Times reported that the commercial value tied to the competitions could roughly double to more than 40 million euros per year, citing a person familiar with the matter. The report included a conversion reference of $1 = 0.8565 euros.
Background
UC3 said the negotiations with Nike are exclusive, indicating that, for the moment, Nike is the sole party engaged in talks to become the official match ball supplier for the 2027-2031 cycle across UEFA men’s club competitions.
Should negotiations conclude in an agreement, it would mark the end of Adidas’ uninterrupted tenure as the match ball provider, a relationship that began in 2001.
Commercial implications
The Financial Times’ reporting suggests a material increase in annual value associated with the match ball supply across the competitions, though that figure is presented as a reported estimate rather than a confirmed contractual sum. The potential increase, if realized, would alter the commercial economics of the match ball supply agreements for UEFA men’s club events.
What remains uncertain
The parties are in exclusive negotiations, which by nature do not guarantee a final agreement. The reported annual value cited by the Financial Times is described as an estimate provided by a person familiar with the matter, and therefore represents information that may be subject to change pending a formal deal and public confirmation.
UC3, Nike and Adidas were identified in the context of the negotiations and historical rights, respectively, but no definitive contract has been announced.
