Mixed sector performance sees energy names fall while select renewables and retail shares rise

Portugal's PSI index closed lower on Friday, retreating 0.28% as losses in Financials, Industrials and Basic Materials outpaced gains. EDP Renovaveis, Sonae SGPS and Corticeira Amorim were among the session's top performers, while Galp Energia, Teixeira Duarte and Mota Engil led decliners. Commodity markets showed higher oil prices and a dip in gold, with currency pairs largely unchanged.

Portugal's equity benchmark finished the session in negative territory on Friday, with the PSI retreating 0.28% at the close in Lisbon. Widespread weakness in Financials, Industrials and Basic Materials contributed to the downbeat finish.

Among individual stocks, EDP Renovaveis (ELI:EDPR) posted one of the largest gains, climbing 1.69% or 0.24 points to end the day at 14.46. Sonae SGPS SA (ELI:YSO) added 1.23% or 0.03 points to close at 2.05, while Corticeira Amorim (ELI:CORA) increased 0.90% or 0.06 points to finish at 6.71.

On the downside, Galp Energia Nom (ELI:GALP) led losses with a 3.16% drop, sliding 0.63 points to finish at 19.32. Teixeira Duarte (ELI:TDSA) fell 2.81% or 0.01 points to close at 0.45 and Mota Engil SGPS SA (ELI:MOTA) was down 1.41% or 0.07 points to 4.95.

Market breadth was mixed. Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Lisbon Stock Exchange by 14 to 14.

Two individual stock milestones were noted during the session. Shares of EDP Renovaveis rose to 52-week highs, reflecting the 1.69% intraday increase to 14.46. Sonae SGPS SA advanced to all time highs, with its 1.23% gain taking the stock to 2.05.

Commodity markets moved notably during the trading day. Brent crude for June delivery climbed 1.42% or 1.36 to trade at $97.28 a barrel. U.S. crude for May delivery rose 1.48% or 1.45 to $99.32 a barrel. By contrast, the June Gold Futures contract declined 0.77% or 37.20 to trade at $4,780.80 a troy ounce.

Major currency pairs showed limited movement. EUR/USD was essentially flat, changing by 0.16% to 1.17, while EUR/GBP registered a 0.05% move to 0.87. The US Dollar Index Futures slipped 0.08% to 98.51.
